Hit Like A Girl Executive Director David Levine has announced that special arrangements have been made for Alice K., one of this year’s Hit Like A Girl contestants from Ukraine, to attend the upcoming UK Drum Show. Alice is a resident of Kyiv where she lives with her mother and father and their Labrador Retriever, Elli.

“I am 9 years old and I’ve been playing drums for 4 years,” Alice says. “I love drumming very much. Also I love my family, my friends, my school and my life— even despite the war. Life is beautiful and unfair.”

While Alice represents the growing number of young girls around the world who are playing drums, she also represents the children of Ukraine who struggle to maintain some sense of normality in the face of danger and devastating brutality. “Alice’s visit to the Drum Show will give her the opportunity to connect with a community that supports and values her,” explains Levine.

Taking place September 30 and October 1 in Liverpool, England, the UK Drum Show features a variety of exhibits as well as educational activities. Over its long and prestigious history the event has become a destination for drummers from England, Europe and the world. Attendees are welcome to stop by the Hit Like A Girl Lounge at TUKDS and say hello to Alice throughout the weekend. For tickets and information, visit www.theukdrumshow.com.

MeldaProduction Release MDrum Strip

0

Music production and audio processing advanced tools-maker MeldaProduction is proud to announce availability of its MDrumStrip powerful plug-in — presenting dedicated (Bass drum, Snare drum, Tom, Tom bus, HiHat, Overheads, Room, Parallel, and Master) devices with custom effect setups for every instrument involved in the self-explanatory stages of a drum mix as an all-in-one acoustic drums solution specifically aimed at semi-automatic drum mixing best suited to metal, pop, and rock genres that intelligently analyses each part of a drum kit to achieve a world-class drum sound in a matter of minutes, seriously simplifying the process and radically reducing the number of plug-ins normally needed to do so.

Achieving a world-class drum sound is no easy task. To mix drums well takes years of practice and, in this DAW-driven day and age, access to tons of plug-ins, yet MeldaProduction managed to simplify the process and reduce the number of plug-ins needed to only one. As an all- in-one solution for mixing modern, punchy-sounding drums, MDrumStrip makes things easy and efficient. It is as easy as routing the drum tracks in the right way, putting the right devices on the right tracks, then analysing and fine-tuning each one accordingly. As such, achieving a well-mixed world-class drum sound should only take a matter of minutes.

MeldaProduction made MDrumStrip by beautifully distilling the complex know-how of how world-class producers do their job into a simple yet versatile end-user experience, effectively removing the need to learn all that know-how before being able to achieve a well-mixed world- class drum sound. After all, is that not what computers are for? It is fair to say, however, that anyone who has already amassed years of drum-mixing experience and already owns dozens of appropriate audio plug-ins of course could continue working as before. But, bearing in mind that they could easily achieve faster and, possibly, even better-sounding results with MDrumStrip, why would they?

As an all-in-one acoustic drums solution specifically aimed at semi-automatic drum mixing, MDrumStrip is duly designed to achieve that one task. Therefore, everything needed is included, with only minimal tweaks required on the user’s part since MDrumStrip smartly analyses all audio and customises its internal algorithms accordingly. An array of more advanced controls are also featured for the benefit of anyone wishing to take things further: for example, equalisation is… well, burdensome, but MDrumStrip is capable of some magical fixes and also has a dedicated dynamic EQ for each track in the drum setup — set the FUNDAMENTAL of the, say, Snare drum device using the analyser, then try different bands to decide whether they make things sound better or worse; adding a little compression no longer cuts it in a modern-day drum-mixing setting, so MDrumStrip allows for a much more intricate blend of punchy transients and powerful sustain, selecting the preferred characteristic quickly and easily using a simple X-Y pad; meanwhile, MDrumStrip’s GATE and BLEEDKILL features let users attenuate the bleed from different elements — especially cymbals — in a drum kit that are fundamental to achieving the tight, punchy sound that is expected from today’s recordings; recording room perfection notwithstanding, quality reverb is always useful — especially on mono close mics, which is exactly why MDrumStrip delivers dozens of algorithms specifically selected to suit different audio material. Meanwhile, MDrumStrip’s zero latency performance means that users can comfortably take it out and use it in a live setting, should they so wish. Whatever way anyone chooses to use it, though, there is no need, necessarily, to dive deeper since MDrumStrip allows anyone to quickly and easily mix a world-class drum sound by following a few simple steps.

MDrumStrip-mix drums quickly and easily following a few steps:

  • Send all drums to one bus and insert MDrumStrip — select the Master device
  • Engage an instance of MDrumStrip on every drum channel and select an appropriate device, such as Snare drum for snare, for instance
  • Solo the snare, and analyse the sound by turning on the Snare drum device’s AUTO INPUT for a few seconds
  • Fine-tune by toggling the Snare drum device’s EQ frequencies
  • Use the Snare drum device’s X-Y pad to tweak the DYNAMICS
  • Use the Snare drum device’s BK (bleed kill) and GATE, if necessary
  • Repeat the process for the Bass drum, Tom, HiHat, Overheads, and Room devices…
  • Create a tom bus channel and send all tom tracks to it by loading MDrumStrip, selecting Tom bus device, and activating AUTO INPUT

To analyse

  • As individual drums are now ready, switch to the drum bus Master device and activate AUTO INPUT
  • Create a parallel bus; load MDrumStrip — select Parallel device, send all tracks to it, and analyse
  • Use the time saved to enjoy some rest and recuperation!

MDrumStrip is available to purchase via its dedicated webpage (https://meldaproduction.com/MDrumStrip) for a time-limited introductory promo price of only €49.00 EUR upon release, rising incrementally by €20.00 EUR each week thereafter until reaching its MSRP (Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price) of €299.00 EUR on September 11, 2023; a 15-day, fully-functional trial version of MDrumStrip is also available by downloading the latest (MAudioPlugins 16.06) universal installer of MeldaProduction tools — to include all virtual effect and instrument plug-ins in 64-bit AAX-, AU-, VST- and VST3-compatible formats for macOS (10.14 or newer) and 64-bit AAX-, VST-, and VST3-compatible formats for Windows (8/10/11) — from here: https://meldaproduction.com/downloads(Choose which ones to install and purchase licenses later with free-for-life updates.)

Air Drums Pioneers Aerodrums Launch Second Model Of Their Instrument

0

Liverpool based Aerodrums is a 3-person bootstrapped company who made the first air drums that play at a musical instrument standard.

After succesfully establishing Aerodrums as a musical instrument, the company is pleased to announce that they are launching Aerodrums 2, a new model of their instrument that doesn’t require a computer.

The launch happened on Kickstarter.com at 2pm BST on Tuesday May 30 with the campaign concluding on June 29.

Aerodrums 2 is a first-of-its-kind instrument that rivals the best electronic drums, at a fraction of the size, weight, noise and cost. Aerodrums 2 features a full curriculum of drum lessons. It offers an optional virtual reality mode enabling users to create a fully playable drum set in their surroundings using the Meta Quest 2 “Pass-through” mode.

General/entertainment interest

The general public still understands air drums in the same way they do air guitar: as miming.

So most people are surprised and inspired when they discover that an air drumming musical instrument actually exists.

There is now a community of thousands of people who drum by air drumming using Aerodrums.

Aerodrums 2 will contribute to popularising the concept by removing the need for a computer to air drum.

“When I first saw it online I thought it was a scam. It’s only when I saw a video of Richard on YouTube that I decided to try it.” says Wolfgang Piroth, drum teacher and Aerodrums user.

Drumming / music interest

Many more people express an interest in the drum set than go on to learn how to play it. The instrument is just too large and loud to fit in most people’s lives. Electronic drums help, but they are still large and still make noise. Aerodrums 2 is an air drumming instrument that fits in a drawer and is silent with headphones.

It is true that there is no rebound off a drum in air drumming. But in fact, air drumming can provide a tactile feeling like hitting a physical drum. This is done by letting the stick collide with your palm to stop it. Doing this feels very natural and enables you to play very fast and with great finesse.

“As a teenager my neighbours only agreed for me to play my drum set one hour each day. Later when I moved into an apartment, I couldn’t play at all. This is why I began researching Aerodrums.” Says Richard Lee, co-creator of Aerodrums.

Computer music making / production interest

Aerodrums 2 can act as a plug & play MIDI controller. It allows for capturing the finesse and dynamics of drum set playing without needing to equip an acoustic drum set with triggers, or to use traditional electronic drums.

Aerodrums 2 can track the motions of sticks, hands and feet and convert them into MIDI events with imperceptible latency. This allows musicians to apply the instrument beyond drum set playing. Aerodrums can tell which limb was used to play a note. Something very few MIDI controllers can do.

“If I want to record a drum idea, say somebody sent me a backing track, so I could get an idea of how I would approach the song to record. I take the USB MIDI from Aerodrums 2 into my Mac, And that’s all you need!” Says Mitch Deighton, professional drummer

Tech interest

Aerodrums 2 uses passive marker optical motion tracking technology. We tried using inertial motion units (IMU) in a collaboration with Intel (Intel Curie). But this does not work because a drummer’s stick moves so fast and is so light that existing IMUs cannot accurately track its acceleration.

Where Aerodrums 1 required a computer to process the sensor frames into sounds, Aerodrums 2 is an embedded “internet-of-things” object: You can plug your headphones or amplifier straight into it. And you can visualise and configure your drums wirelessly with any mobile device or PC.

Aerodrums 2 also offers a virtual reality mode with support for Meta Quest headsets. With the “Pass through” mode available on Quest 2, you can superimpose a fully playable drum set into your environment.

Aerodrums 2 is built on NXP Semiconductors’ i.MX 8 platform.

“I was amazed that I could not perceive any latency between hitting a drum and hearing it, and at how accurate the 3D tracking is. There is some serious computing happening in this tiny box.” Says Mitch Deighton, professional drummer and tech enthusiast

Education interest

The drum set is a very popular instrument with children. But it is underrepresented in schools because of how large and loud it is.

Aerodrums 2’s small size and quietness makes it easier for schools to offer drum set practice.

It is the nature of acoustic or electronic drums that you hit them to play them. Breaking cymbals or pads. Not so with Aerodrums 2. This makes it practical for schools or public libraries to offer it as a loan instrument for home use.

Aerodrums 2 offers a full curriculum of drum lessons, as well as drumming exercises presented as minigames.

“One third of my students drop out because of not being able to play at home: they just loose motivation. I now introduce them to Aerodrums and have seen great results.” Says Wolfgang Piroth, drums teacher and Aerodrums user

Entrepreneurship interest

The Aerodrums company was started in 2011 with $30,000 of personal savings by its co-founders Richard Lee and Yann Morvan. The company has not sought investors in its 12 years history.

Richard and Yann have played the venture capital game on TV (BBC Dragons’ Den, season 13, episode 13, 24 January 2016). But the aim was to publicize Aerodrums 1.

The company had positive cash flow immediately upon launching that instrument at the 2014 NAMM show.

The Aerodrums 1 instrument piggy-backed on third party commodity hardware: Sony’s Playstation 3 Eye camera, and the end user’s computer.

For Aerodrums 2, the company developed its own sensor and embedded system, removing the computer requirement. This was funded by retained earnings and research & development grants by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme and the Liverpool City Region’s High Growth Innovation Fund.

Aerodrums’ bootstrapping has enabled the company to realise its vision without the compromises that might have occurred due to investors’ short-term interest. It has also enabled the co-founders to spend time with their 2-, 2- and 5-year-old children without feeling pressure from investors.

“Air drumming is one of those ideas whose time has come. These don’t need capital. Just patience. Like revolutions really.” Says Yann Morvan, co-founder of Aerodrums

Environment interest

It takes over 60kg of wood and metal to make an acoustic drum set. And over 20kg of plastic and metal to make an electronic drum set. Most drum sets are made in the far east and travel long distances to the end user. They also require a car to transport.

By contrast, Aerodrums 2 weighs under 1.5kg and fits in a backpack. It is made in Liverpool, UK.

Be sure to come and try out Aerodrums for yourself at The UK Drum Show 2023.

Pearl and legendary drummer Dennis Chambers create new “10-over 8” Signature Snare

0

To be truly great, one must evolve over time. Drumming legend Dennis Chambers took this to heart when considering the transformation of his snare drum sound. Designed for sonic evolution, the new Pearl Dennis Chambers Signature Snare drum employs the multi-lug design of his previous Signature model, with ten STL100 single swivel tuning lugs on the batter side, and eight on the snare side for top-end tonal focus.

The real difference comes with its SR300 Multi-Timbre Strainer that features three individually tunable 6-strand snappy wire snares. Each can be engaged or disengaged to further sculpt the sound of the drum. Pearl’s durable Mastercast Die-Cast Hoops also add weight for increased projection.

“I got this idea from the Pearl Symphonic series snare drum,” Dennis admits. “I fell in love with the idea of having three different snare settings on one drum.”

Features include the 4-ply Maple with 4-ply Re-Ring shell of his original Signature model, Evans G12 batter and snare heads, and a Matte Black lacquer finish for visual versatility. The Dennis Chambers Signature Snare delivers a solid, searing, and articulate sound that fits well in any playing field.
