Pearl Reimagines A Premium Maple Favourite With Masters Maple Pure

0

Since 1993, Pearl’s Masters Series has set a standard for the very best in performance-centered instruments for the pro drummer. In celebration of three decades of Masters quality and excellence, Pearl reimagines the original 5mm MMX shell with Masters Maple Pure.

Blending four layers of hand-curated North American Maple with 4-ply Reinforcement-Rings from our Masterworks Veneer Vault, this premium Masters shell formula delivers a sonic fusion that is equally at home on stage as it is in the studio. A precise 45-degree Bearing Edge completes the recipe for near-field resonance and sharp top-end attack fit for varied pro environments.

“When you hit these drums, you get that initial tonality that shapes what you’d normally associate with the original Masters sound,” says Nashville Session legend Shannon Forrest. “But now there’s all this back-end sustain on the drums. Sustain that you could never get out of drums from that era.”

Professional Pearl standards like Mastercast Die-Cast Hoops, CL Bridge Lugs, and revamped bass drum spurs and floor tom brackets assure optimum performance. At the same time, the ground-breaking R2 Air Tom Suspension system’s four-point mounting platform delivers optimum tone and resonance at any angle.

With a dizzying array of Premium and Custom finishes from which to choose, each Masters Maple Pure Series drum set reaches new levels of sonic purity, fit for the most discerning professional player.

The UK Drum Show Welcomes Back Mike Johnston And Special Guests to Education Room

0

Organisers of The UK Drum Show are pleased to welcome back top online educator Mike Johnston and special guests to the ‘Mike Johnston Education Room for 2023.

“Needing very little introduction and following Mike’s outstanding appearance at The UK Drum Show back in 2018 and 2022, we’re massively excited to welcome back the incredible Mike Johnston to The UK Drum Show 2023, bringing his immense skills as resident and host of our new Education Room.”

This room will see Mike along with world-class drum educators, Carter McLean and Richard Spaven along with others, at the very top of their game, delivering lessons over the course of the weekend, giving visitors the chance to truly learn from the Pros.

Guests who have purchased a day or weekend admission ticket can check out any of the lessons for free, with a larger room organised to accommodate more drummers for 2023, following the demand and uptake from last year.

Mike Johnston

Mike Johnston is an American drummer and educator from Folsom, California. He currently runs one of the world’s largest educational website for drummers, mikeslessons.com, where he offers live and pre-recorded drum lessons. He also hosts 10 drum camps each year at the mikeslessons.com studio in Folsom, California.

At the age of 21 he received his first major label record deal with his band Simon Says and spent the next 6 years touring the world. During that time, he received a gold record for his contributions to the Varsity Blues soundtrack and appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman as well as on MTV’s Fashionably Loud.

Mike left the touring world behind in 2006 and has focused solely on education ever since. Teaching and performing in hundreds of clinics and drum festivals around the world over the past 14 years including the Meinl Drum Festival, P.A.S.I.C., The UK Drum Show, The LaBag Show in Paris, and countless others.

Mike is the only drum instructor in history to be featured on the cover of the 4 major drum magazines (Modern Drummer, DRUM, Rhythm, and Drummer UK) as well as iDrum Magazine and SA Drummer.

Richard Spaven

Combining machine-like accuracy with jazz-influenced improvisational sensibilities, Richard Spaven’s drumming has landed him gigs with vastly varied artists such as Flying Lotus, José James and Mala, as well as recent recordings with Jordan Rakei, Alfa Mist and Sandunes.

Forging his own path into the future with roots in the U.K. club and hip-hop scenes, the drummer brings a fresh approach to the instrument that’s at once modern and traditional.

Combining machine-like accuracy with jazz-influenced improvisational sensibilities, Richard Spaven’s drumming has landed him gigs with vastly varied artists such the late Guru of the hip-hop duo Gang Starr, producer Flying Lotus, electronica/jazz group the Cinematic Orchestra, jazz/hip-hop vocalist José James and Brainfeeder artist Jameszoo. Spaven’s brilliance is evident beyond his world-class performance abilities; he’s equally impressive in production and compositional territories. And most recently, the drummer released his fourth solo album, Real Time, which once again showcases his multifaceted talent.

Appearing in association with Meinl Cymbals.

Carter McLean

Carter was born in San Francisco and shortly thereafter moved to Connecticut. This is where McLean listened to and fell in love with music and especially the drums. At age 10, he started his journey as a musician.

Broadway wasn’t even on his radar when he started working at Manny’s Music in Manhattan just prior to 9/11. The self-taught musician had just wrapped up his studies at University of Colorado, Boulder and was hoping to land a gig with someone like Sting, Peter Gabriel or Paul Simon. But then, while working his shift and playing at the store, he got noticed by a vet of Stevie Wonder’s band Dennis Davis and got invited to play with legendary musician Roy Ayers in Harlem.

While touring with Melvin Sparks in 2002 McLean was approached to be a sub at The Lion King in NYC. This eventually lead to McLean taking over the chair at the hit show in 2011. From Charlie Hunter to the Lion King on Broadway, McLean has been busy touring and doing studio work as well as having a busy teaching schedule.

In addition McLean has shared the stage or recorded with Charlie Hunter, Jamie McLean, Greg Holden, Anthony Hamilton, Bernie Worrell (Parlament Funkadelic), Fred Wesley (James Brown), Shelby Johnson (Prince), Melanie Gabriel (Peter Gabriel) Leni Stern, Matt Duke and many others. Carter also has an award winning book that was released in 2019 called Concepts and Creativity from Hal Leonard.

Appearing in association with Ludwig Drums.

Latin Percussion Launch Panderos De Plena Handheld Folkloric Puerto Rican Drums

0

Latin Percussion (LP) is pleased to present its new Panderos De Plena, a collection of handheld drums to honor the rhythmic heritage and culture Puerto Rico. This further expands the brands extensive range of professional world and ethnic percussion instruments.

Plena is one of the most popular music genres of Puerto Rico with its roots in African music and dance. The lyrics of plena are said to be the ‘sung newspaper’ dealing with current events allowing the people to express themselves in a serious or light-hearted way. The panderos are an essential instrument in this form of music. These handheld drums are available in three sizes, the Requinto for solos and leads, the Seguidor for bass and the Punteador for rhythm.

The new LP Panderos De Plena have been crafted from segmented Durian wood, fitted with traditional rims, chrome-plated hardware, natural rawhide heads and 5/16” diameter J-hook tension rods. These instruments are available in the Requinto 10” (LP5010), Punteador 12” (LP5012) and Seguidor 14” (LP5014) sizes. The drums are sold individually, and all come with a carry bag.

Camilo Molina and Marcos Lopez, who worked with LP’s R&D team on the development of these panderos, commented “This collaboration and development was very refreshing. It was important to honor the way our ancestors built these instruments and facilitate this knowledge to a team we trust. As Puerto Ricans and practitioners of the bomba and plena genres, we are very excited that LP recognizes the importance and impact of our music and want to share it with the world.”

Latin Percussion Introduces The Paoli Mejias Signature Congas and Bongos

0

Latin Percussion (LP) is delighted to introduce the Paoli Mejias Signature Balance Congas and Bongos.

Paoli Mejias is a world-renowned musician, percussionist, and bandleader. As a percussionist, he has been part of the legendary Santana band for the last ten years. Mejias’ playing is balanced, charismatic, and full of passionate Afro-Caribbean traditional rhythms. As a band leader he is recognized for the way he blends world folk rhythms to create a new element to Latin Jazz which is global, contemporary, and dynamic.

The Paoli Mejias Signature Balance Congas consist of an 11” Quinto (LP522Z-PMB), an 11-¾” Conga (LP559Z-PMB) and a 12- ½” Tumba (LP552Z-PMB). Each are built using 30” tall Sculpted Ash wood shells and fitted with natural rawhide heads and extended Collar Comfort Curve II rims. They are finished with Premium Galaxy, chrome-plated hardware, 3/8” diameter tuning lugs, reinforced heart side plates, and LP ProCare Shell Protectors.

To complement the conga set, LP have made the Paoli Mejias Signature Balance Bongos. The 7-¼” and 8-5/8” drums also have shells made from Sculpted Ash, feature natural rawhide heads, and Comfort Curve II rims. The bongos have 5/16” diameter tuning lugs, chrome-plated hardware, steel backing plate, and plated cast aluminium bottoms. These signature bongos produce crackling highs and rich mid-tones to work well with the congas. The badge art on both sets is based on yin and yang symbolism signifying the ‘balance’ of these drums working together in harmony.

Balance is the name I gave to my new drums because they represent the balance and measure that I have to have in life. It is the movement in a constant rhythm in search of the golden mean, the Balance,” Paoli commented.
