Mojave Audio MA-201fet: FOH Mixers’ New ‘Secret Weapon’ For Drum Miking

0

Designed by Technical Grammy Award winner David Royer, the MA-201fet was created as an alternative to more expensive large diaphragm condenser microphones, designed to work across a variety of live sound applications. Since its launch in 2008, an increasing number of FOH mixers have been deploying the Mojave MA-201fet microphones as their ‘go-to’ overheads on drums. Among these top engineers are Chris Rabold, FOH engineer for Bruno Mars, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Kenny Chesney and others.

“Overhead miking in a live environment is as nuanced, and often as troublesome, as it gets,” says Rabold. “Between overly excited players, questionable acoustics, stage noise, slapback reflections from the house, you can often end up with something akin to white noise. The Mojave MA-201fet manages to reach through the chaos and emanate the detail from the kit that I need. I can’t say enough about these mics and their performance over the years.”

Rabold, who has most recently been touring with artists Bruno Mars and Silk Sonic, says that he began using the MA-201 fet in 2015 and hasn’t looked back since: “As overheads, I can get an impressive sound using them to mic a full cohesive kit, or use them as spot mics and focus on the articulation of each drum without any artifacts or harshness that can be very common in live sound. The MA-201fet is my first choice for every tour.”

Rabold has taken it upon himself to spread the word to fellow engineers. “I can count on two hands the number of other engineers I’ve turned on to these mics that have not only gone on to spec them on their tours, but also to purchase them for themselves,” he says.” They’re that immediately impressive.” Another engineer who’s had a long standing relationship with Mojave is James “Jimbo” Neal, who uses the Mojave MA-201fet as a big part of his overhead drum mic set up and also as part of Brian Setzer’s guitar set up.

James “Jimbo” Neal, FOH Engineer for Brian Setzer

One of the challenges FOH engineers face is capturing that sonic warmth and detail, most often associated with working in a recording studio. “I depend on a Mojave MA-201fet to capture a full picture of the drum kit with enhanced warmth and clarity,” says Ken “Pooch” Van Druten, FOH Sound Engineer for Iron Maiden, Jay-z, Linkin Park, Kiss and others. “It is the only mic I use for my ride cymbal and overhead inputs.”

Ken “Pooch” Van Druten, FOH Sound Engineer for Iron Maiden

Production Manager and FOH Mixer Jamie Landry adds that while mixing Norah Jones live, he prefers overhead drum mics that impart a natural, detailed sound for the entire kit — not just the cymbals. “Norah’s drummer, Brian Blade, is such a dynamic and nuanced drummer with an incredible tone. These Mojave microphones really allow me to capture all of this nuance.

Both Dave McMullin, Monitor Engineer and Justin Ripley, FOH Engineer for OneRepublic, lean heavily on their drum overhead sound for the OneRepublic show.  “We need microphones that provide an image of the kit with depth and clarity.  Because they’re so even across the entire frequency range and built like a tank, the Mojave MA-201fet meets all of our needs. Thanks to everyone over at Mojave for your ingenuity and impeccable customer service.”

Justin Ripley, FOH Engineer for OneRepublic

The MA-201fet is a large diaphragm, phantom-powered, solid-state condenser microphone with a fixed cardioid pattern. With its roots in a lineage of microphone designs by David Royer, the MA-201fet imparts warm, full-bodied reproductions of both vocals and instruments, without shrillness and high frequency distortion artifacts. This makes it suitable for a variety of applications. In addition to drum overheads and drum rooms, the MA-201fet is also well suited for applications including high SPL sources such as kick drums and bass guitar amps, electric guitar, piano, and a range of acoustic instruments.

Outfitted with a 3-micron, single-sided, gold-sputtered capsule, high-quality Jensen audio transformer, military-grade FET and custom designed low-noise resistors, the MA-201fet performs at a level competing with some of the best loved classic condenser microphones. Each MA-201fet microphone is carefully tested and evaluated, then packaged in its protective case with a professional grade shockmount.

Stephane Misseghers (dEUS) joins high-end newcomer Taran Custom Drums

0

Taran Custom Drums are thrilled to welcome dEUS drummer Stephane Misseghers as an official endorsee.

“Once a professional musician is happy with his brand of instruments, it’s often very hard to change their mind to something else. But sometimes, the different pieces of the puzzle fit together so nicely that a change of heart is simply impossible to resist. And that’s exactly what happened when Stephane Misseghers from dEUS got in touch with us, here at Taran Custom Drums.”

Scouting the field first

“I first met Frank from Taran over a year ago when he asked me to come and test his drums in his shop”, Stephane recalls. “When I saw and tested his drums, I immediately knew that this was the real deal.” But when trying to seduce an international artist, producing premium quality isn’t enough. Consistency, reliability and being able to deliver quickly are just as important. And back in 2021, Taran still had some learning to do in that regard. “I liked the idea of promoting a Belgian brand as a Belgian musician right from the start, but when you’re on the road you need to be sure you don’t get in trouble with your gear”, says Stephane. “When playing with a smaller brand, that might be an issue.” Stephane Misseghers. “Finally, in November last year, Stephane felt confident enough to give it a shot.” – Taran Custom Drums.

A kit with an amazing look and a supreme sound

Stephane asked for specific measurements for the kit, so Taran built him a 5 piece kit that’s made up of a 10×7’ and a 13×7,5’ rack tom, a 16×16’ and a 18×16’ floor tom and a 24×14’ bass drum. Taking into account that he plays rock music and likes a solid low pitch, Taran opted for shells in mostly mahogany. But a special kit needs a special design so Taran added an extra touch with a padouk band in the middle, rimmed with maple lines.

“The kit is very stable in the low tones: no wows, no flutters”

And how does Stephane feel about his kit? “The low tones of this kit are amazing, especially in the toms and floor toms. They’re very stable, there are no wows or flutters,” he says. “And once the kit is tuned, the PA guy has a very easy job. He just has to open the channels and you’re good to go.” And as far as looks go, Stephane loves the finishing of the kit which is crafted to perfection. It definitely sparks curiosity for what more this brand has in store for the drumming world.

Taran Custom Drums

Founded in 2020 Taran Custom Drums is a Belgian brand of premium snare drums and drum kits. Founder and master builder Frank Cox takes pride in building nothing short from the best possible instruments that can sway even the most demanding professional. This way he wants to help drummers to stand out with a unique look and sound that matches their style as a performer. As such, Taran’s motto “built to blast”, speaks for itself. This company wants to blow musicians away on every possible level: quality, look, sound and experience. They aim to give their customers nothing but perfection.

Stephane Misseghers

Stephane Misseghers is a Belgian drummer who’s best known for his performances as a (former) member of Soulwax, Vive la Fête, Waldorf. He has been a member of dEUS since 2003. He is also a seasoned producer and a guest teacher at the Conservatory of Ghent.

New Cymbal Company Royal Cymbals is Launched in Massachusetts

0

Paul Francis, with thirty-five years of cymbal making experience, and Sarah Hagan, with twenty years of experience in cymbal sounds, marketing, branding, and relationship building, have launched Royal Cymbals!

Paul Francis spent decades learning everything there is to know about cymbal making, earning an engineering degree, and inventing countless techniques, sounds, and breakthrough cymbal models. Paul became known as one of the premier cymbal makers in the world. He created the Cymbal Craftsman boutique line of cymbals and set up a cymbal custom shop, which includes modifications and fully customized cymbal offerings. Paul has now teamed up with Sarah Hagan to launch the Royal Cymbal Company to encompass standard cymbal models, as well as the Cymbal Craftsman custom shop.

Sarah Hagan spent decades building relationships, and learning everything possible about cymbal sounds and drummers’ sonic needs. While working with the world’s top drummers, and seeking out and signing the best up-and-coming artists, she also lent her ears and a musician’s perspective to the cymbal creation process. In 2000, Sarah launched a consulting company, working with top brands in the drum industry and created a drumming podcast called Sarah Hagan Backstage, eventually partnering with other drumming podcasters to create The Drum Click, the world’s first drum podcast network.

Over the years, Paul and Sarah have worked together, along with the world’s greatest drummers, to create many of the modern cymbal sounds you hear in live music and on countless recordings. They will continue to do this with Royal Cymbals!

Paul commented, “At Royal Cymbals we are taking the 400-year-old tradition of cymbal making into the future. If you can think it, we can make it. Whether you play drums in your basement or on the world’s biggest stages, we are going to help you craft your sound.” Sarah continued with this this theme, saying, “Utilizing our combined 55 years of cymbal sound expertise, we will take your sound ideas and create an instrument that you will love. Within our lines of Royal Cymbals, including the custom-made Cymbal Craftsman cymbals, we offer you a full range of sound colours, and we will also modify your current cymbals to better fit your needs.”
