With a huge number of visitor requests, organisers of The UK Drum Show are very pleased to confirm Craig Blundell will appear on the main stage at next years event in association with Mapex Drums and Paiste Cymbals.

Craig is recognized in the top handful of “Progressive” drummers, educators and clinicians in the world. Over his decades of playing and studying, he’s dedicated hour upon hour studying his trade and gradually built up his profile and reputation over the last few years as a true ambassador for British drumming on the international scene. He took a step back from clinics and drum festivals in 2015 to concentrate on his work with Steven Wilson where he was the drummer for two successful world tours over four years. In that time Craig also played on many albums including several lonely robot albums and “Falling Satellites” by *Frost, a band he’s recently been reunited with for a tour in November

Millions of people a day listen to his recording and programming work on television, radio globally every day whether it be radio jingles, or TV theme tunes, most recently Toast of Tinseltown with his long term musical collaborator Matt Berry of which they produced two albums, The Blue Elephant and Phantom Birds.

He has played in many different settings and genres over the years, from serving in the Royal Marines Corps of Drums aged 16 to performing at the world’s biggest drum festivals. He has performed with members of many iconic bands  but it’s the Progressive genre where he is establishing himself globally and where he’s most at home. Craig is currently on his second world tour with Steve Hackett. He still works with many companies on the developments of their products, most notable, Mapex and his signature “Machine” snare drum and over 15 products for Roland.

Craig’s clinics are a real event and always get well received all over the world. He’s not been in this setting for quite some time, it’ll be one not to miss!

Mapex Mars Reimagined With Maple & Birch

0

Mapex is excited to introduce a “Pocket-Friendly Sonic Classic” for those seeking the timeless, warm, and smooth sound of a classic 100% Maple shell and invites you to “Be The Spark” with exciting new finishes for those who prefer the tonal balance and controlled punch of 100% birch shells.

Mapex Mars Maple and Mars Birch continue to build on the storied Mars series legacy, long heralded as a benchmark for tone, quality, and value as a mid-range offering. Mars drums have served the heart of the drumming experience across the gamut of players, from beginners to pro-level musicians, for generations. The new Mars Maple and Mars Birch now contribute to further elevating this tradition, offering modern feature-laden kits with beautiful finish options for a completely re-imagined series lineup.

New Mars series drums are appointed with proprietary Mapex SONIClear bearing edges, allowing the drumhead to sit flatter and make better contact with the shell. This important feature, utilized on Mapex professional kits such as the Black Panther Design Lab and Saturn Evolution, both expands tuning range and deepens the fundamental pitch to add dimension and character to the tone of the 100% 7-ply European maple or 100% 6-ply birch shells. Additional features include insulated bass drum claws, matching wood snare drums, and bass drum-mounted tom holders equipped with the SONIClear suspension system to provide maximum sustain and projection.

Not stopping at tone, the appearance of these drums won’t fail to impress, with four stunning Mars Maple lacquer finishes and four new Mars Birch sparkle wrapped finishes sure to make any drummer proud. The kits are presented in a variety of configurations, providing the versatility for any player to continue wherever their “Drummer for Life” adventure might lead them.

“Maple has long been a standard, and birch a studio mainstay,” remarks Mapex US Brand Manager Jeff Mulvihill. “When you think of how drums sound on your favorite recordings in virtually any genre, there is a good chance that these are birch or maple drums that you’re hearing. They are timeless classic options, and we are thrilled to bring this accessible, pocket-friendly series to drummers everywhere.”

Jon Cross Custom Drums Joins UK Drum Show Line-up!

0

New to the exhibition hall for 2023, The UK Drum Show are thrilled to welcome British builder Jon Cross Custom Drums to next years event.

Jon Cross custom drums are handmade shells in exotic woods from around the world in stave and segment construction. Snare drums and full kits can be made to order with high quality hardware in chrome or black nickel and finished with a high gloss or satin clearcoat. Snare drums typically come with Trick 3 position strainers and Puresound snare wires along with the drum heads of your choice. Wood hoops can also be made to match or compliment a snare and have a very elegant profile with a strong design. Full kits are also made to order to customer requirements regarding wood species, number of toms and sizes, with bass drum hoops made to match the shell.

Attention to detail is a big part of a Jon Cross custom drum which features an inlaid badge and a maple inlay around the bearing edge of a snare drum which not only adds a cool aesthetic but also strength around the top and bottom joints. For segment shells the wood boards are laid out and marked up before the blocks are cut and then glued back together in sequence as they were, so that the grain is returned to its original pattern. High gloss finishes are wet sanded between coats until a mirror finish is achieved by buffing and polishing.

Drummer’s Review Xtra: Reviewed: Balbex Drum Sticks

Hailing from the Czech Republic, Balbex have been manufacturing drum sticks for around a quarter of a century and have gradually been branching out to other countries over the years.  Here we have a selection of twelve models from their extensive catalogue of sticks as a taster of their wares.

The sticks we have share some of the same characteristics. Each is made from Premium Hickory and are finished with a special double grip. Balbex say that the first layer hardens the wood and the second layer adds an anti-skid surface for less chance of dropping a stick.

Balbex say that all materials are specially dried to maximum humidity of 7% and the drying process really helps to wood compaction to harden the materials and significantly expand the sticks lifetime.

The sticks are then sorted into weight categories to within 2 grams and packed into pairs according to the resonance and colour of the wood.

In detail and starting with the thinner sticks:

G7A – Probably what most people would associate with a 7A stick. Perfect for lighter players or young drummers whose hands are a little smaller with a good weight and balance and wooden acorn tip.

Ultra Jazz – Thin neck and relatively small, squashed acorn tip. Great rebound, feels like a longer 7A.

7A – Long, gradual taper with ball tip for a more defined cymbal sound – where most companies utilise an oval or acorn tip, this makes for a nice change.

5A – Oval tips with medium taper, very well balanced pair.

5AN – Obviously, brighter sounding but fractionally more front heavy than the wood tipped version, which may suit some players.

5AL – An extended, fatter 5A with acorn tips and slightly shorter taper.

Jazz – Oval tips and is basically an extended version of the regular 5A stick. A great starting point for anyone looking for a ‘standard’ stick to start off with although the name could be deceiving.

5BN – Acorn shaped Nylon tip gave a bright, attack with thin neck and good, controlled rebound.

5B Ringo 1 – Oval tip with more gradual taper leading to not as much ‘bounce’ due to thicker neck.

Pro 1 – Less rebound and forward heavy due to the shorter taper and also possessing quite a thick neck leading up to the ball shaped tip.

VH – Comparable to a fatter and longer 5B stick, would be more at home in heavier styles of music due to the medium taper with a thick neck and rounded tip which works a dream on ride cymbals for a precise ping.

Extreme – Very large barrel tip, thick neck and short taper. Not as heavy as they looked. After spending 5mins at the start of a practice session warming up with these and they felt very comfortable.  The obvious thing would be to say that this model would be suited to heavier players but marching players would equally be suited to these sticks.

In Summary, we were really pleased with all of the models we got sent.  Some may find that the anti-slip grip restricts the natural micro turns that a stick usually makes in ones hands, and may cause blisters or callouses in the same way that other companies with rubber dipped handles does, but this is a personal preference.

£10.99 per pair or £9.99 if 5 pairs or more are bought online.

Drumming’s Biggest Names To Play LIVE Tribute to Their Big Band Heroes

0

HITKOR (www.hitkor.com) today announced its first-ever charity event which will take place over two days in mid-October. “A Salute to the Big Band Greats” will feature performances from all-star drummers Peter Erskine, Russ Miller and Dennis Chambers on October 20th and Kirk Covington, Adam Nussbaum, Jeff Hamilton and Steve Smith on October 21. Both events will start at 5 p.m. (PDT). The premium LIVE streaming concert is presented by HITKOR’s charitable arm, Hitkor Kares, to honor music industry luminary Sandy Feldstein. A portion of event sales will be donated to the NAMM Foundation, a 501c3 charitable nonprofit organization supporting music education outreach programs.

“For this outstanding drumming event, I get to play the title track from the first Krupa album I owned, ‘Drumming Man,’ and that national anthem for drummers, ‘Drum Boogie.’ And what salute to this era would be complete without ‘Flying Home’? The older I get, the more I ‘get’ Gene Krupa, and I’m grateful for this opportunity to play his music as showcased in this terrific arrangement and played by this great big band,” says Peter Erskine.

These drumming legends will be performing reimagined arrangements of standards made famous by Buddy Rich, Louie Bellson, Gene Krupa, Joe Morello and more. A 17-piece big band has been assembled to play suites composed by arranger Duane Benjamin who has performed with the Count Basie Orchestra, Stanley Clark and contemporary legends like BTS, Justin Timberlake, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Earth Wind & Fire and countless others. Notable performers include saxophonists Tom Scott (The Blues Brothers and led the jazz fusion group L.A. Express), Jerry Vivino (Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons, Tony Bennett, Ray Charles) and George Shelby (Phil Collins, Dancing With The Stars, The Voice, American Idol, Barry Manilow). Entertainer and comedian Jay Flats, who recently wrapped a 10-year stint with the Los Angeles Kings and has warmed up television audiences for more than two decades, is slated to host both shows.

HITKOR

Tickets are on sale now for day one and day two, only at HITKOR.com. The live streaming broadcasts will be available to the public in more than 30 countries. LIVE tickets are $17.99. ALL ACCESS passes are $19.99 and include bonus, behind-the-scenes content.

“This is an incredible opportunity to pay our respects to legends that have shaped everything we do as professional players and to be surrounded by tremendous, high-level talent,” says Miller, who will be performing and is also CEO of HITKOR. “It is an absolute thrill to be able to raise money for music education in honor of my mentor Sandy Feldstein.”

The NAMM Foundation is a supporting organization of NAMM, for which Feldstein has served on the board and its predecessor organization, the International Foundation for Music Research, that spearheaded leading music research that underpins our understandings about the profound impact of music learning. A drummer, percussionist, mentor, author and educator with more than 700 books and pieces published, Feldstein is also a member of the Percussive Arts Society’s Hall of Fame, and was inducted alongside drumming legend, Steve Gadd.

“Sandy Feldstein left an indelible mark across the field of music as is celebrated by this incredible event; his memory and legacy continues to inspire so many to join together to celebrate the joy of making music today,” said Mary Luehrsen, Executive Director of The NAMM Foundation. “Support for this event will be felt in the creation of new music makers that will inspire the sound of the future.”

Ticket buyers can tailor their viewing experience via the multicam KORplayer and will also have extended access to the concert footage for a minimum of one year. Viewers can expect premium video while immersed in HEAR360 Spatial Audio and become “directors” of the show by choosing different camera angles and customizing what they want to see when viewing an Encore performance. Using their mobile device, they can explore the stage in dynamic 180-degree virtual reality. A LIVE ticket admits viewers to the main live stream event, while the ALL-ACCESS pass upgrade includes bonus video content prior to the main show.

Jump Into Drumming With The Gretsch Energy Series

0

Experiencing your own look, your own sound, your own instrument for the first time means taking care of all the components, putting together cymbals and hardware, and possibly also being disappointed with the setup and sound for the first time.

Gretsch, the traditional American company, offers a solution with the ENERGY series! An all-round carefree package, which is delivered completely ready to play; only sticks need to be provided.

The chrome-plated, double-braced Gretsch hardware is stable, light and includes everything needed for a successful start: tom holder with memory lock, bass drum pedal, hi-hat stand, one or two cymbal stands depending on the model, and a stable stool as well.

All five shells are made of seven-ply poplar wood and have the typical Gretsch 30° bearing edge, on which high-quality “Gretsch by Remo” heads cleanly lie. They are held by 1.6 mm thick steel hoops, and the bass drum hoops are made of wood.

The included 101 cymbal set from the renowned Swiss manufacturer Paiste gives the set a decisive drive and puts an end to the clattering of metal that beginners (and their parents) so often suffer from. Depending on the version, the 13″ hi-hats come with an 18″ crash/ride or a 16″ crash/20″ ride combination.

The set is available in the colours red, black and steel grey and in three different versions. The jazz/pop version with 20″ bass drum is available with either the two-piece or the three-piece cymbal set, while the more dynamic rock version has 22″ bass drum, slightly larger toms and also includes cymbals.
