0

Drum Workshop, Inc. (DW) salutes “The Queen of Percussion” with the Sheila E. Collector’s Series® ICON™ Snare Drum.

A groundbreaking and GRAMMY-winning percussionist, Sheila “Sheila E.” Escovedo rocketed to fame through collaborations with Prince and her solo catalog, starting with her seminal 1984 album, The Glamorous Life.

Sheila’s Icon 5.5×13” drum is built with a handcrafted 12-ply HVLT™ North American Hard Rock Maple shell, finished with an outer veneer of Birdseye Maple. The striking exterior is decorated with Sheila’s name written backwards in gold leaf in her original signature style. Also inlaid are a flutter of laser-cut butterflies crafted from dyed Basswood (blue, red, and purple), Pearwood (black), and Poplar (orange). The snare produces slightly higher tonality with a classic punchy and warm character.

This limited-edition drum is fitted with premium gold and patented DW hardware, including the MAG throw-off™, True-Pitch®, TP50 tuning rods, True Hoops®, and more. Only 250 units of this incredible snare will be made, each with a deluxe DW carrying case and a certificate of authenticity signed by John Good. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of each snare will be donated to the charity nominated by Sheila.

The Wait Is Over – Slingerland Drums Are Back

0

The wait is over, the Slingerland Drum Company, steeped in decades of drumming history, is back!

Formed in Chicago in the 1920’s by H.H. Slingerland, the Slingerland Drum Company was known for its iconic kits and snare drums. In the 1930s,the brand launched the legendary Radio King drums, and the renowned drummer Gene Krupa became the company’s first endorsee. Over the decades, Slingerland continued to create innovative drums and inspire generations of drummers. Although the company stopped producing drums in 2008, today, many producers, studios, and music collectors own at least one vintage Slingerland.

“Slingerland is one of the great American drum brands, so I am thrilled to be part of the next chapter in the Slingerland story,”explained DW Founder Don Lombardi. “Slingerland has a rich legacy and is dear to my heart, so when Chris, my son, presented me with the purchase of the Slingerland brand for my birthday in 2019, our talented craftsmen began working to leave no stone unturned in preserving the company’s sound and details everyone knows and loves.”

To mark the historic return,a new Radio King Limited Edition Snare celebrates Slingerland’s craftsmanship, history, and sound. Built to the same design specifications that made the original a favourite with drummers worldwide, this is a faithful recreation of the legendary snare from the late 1930s and early 1940s.

The shells are constructed using steam-bent solid Maple and period-correct Nickel-plated hardware, Nickel-over-Brass Stick Chopper hoops, and a genuine calfskin batter head. Only 50 Radio King Limited Edition Snares will be made in each size and color. They will be available in two sizes, 7 x 14” and 5 x 14”, and four unique finishes: Black Diamond Pearl, White Marine Pearl, Blue and Silver Lacquer, and Black and Gold Lacquer. In store now, each snare is numbered and signed by Don Lombardi, and each will be sold with a Radio King snare case.

The Radio King snare is just the beginning of many new drums from Slingerland, and we will be designing and crafting a full line of drums for the next generation of drummers. The next chapter of the Slingerland story is here, and we’re back to celebrate the heritage, launch new innovations, and carry forward the Slingerland legacy one drum at a time.

No EQ:

Direct microphone sound – no EQ either pre or post recording applied from the Neve 5052 Pre-Amps EQ section.

Basic EQ:

Basic EQ setting using the EQ section of the Neve 5052 mic Pre-Amps. No post recoded EQ or processing applied.

Full Studio Mix:

Post EQ section of the Neve 5052 mic Pre-Amps plus post production EQ, gating, parallel compression and some reverb added to the snare and toms. There was also some room mic processing along with parallel drum bus adding compression and reverb to the overall sound.

A Note From Paul…

“The microphones were set up with the overheads and room mic’s measured to the centre of the snare drum to keep the phase of any stereo pair in phase. The AEA R88 MK2 mic’s being stereo mic’s had no issue with phase but the front centre room mic and centre overhead where aligned with each other to keep the same stereo image. The phase reverse switch on the front kick mic was used to correct the phase between the two bass drum mic’s. The phase reverse switch was engaged on the bottom snare mic to correct the phase between the two snare mic’s. Hi pass filters only used on the hi hat mic, Ride mic and overheads. The AKG C414B mic’s on the toms have very little proximity bass boost so can be considered a pretty flat representation of the toms. The same can be said for the Electrovoice PL80 mic’s on the snare drum. Every effort was made so that the NO EQ sound example audio on the video was as true a representation of what the drums sounded like in the live room. The live room of the studio has been treated to also provide a neutral sound close to the drums with the room mic’s then giving a true representation of what the drums sound like in the room. Using 16 identical Mic Pre amps also helps with electrical phase so there is no difference between tone and phase of the Mic Pre amps. The brief for recoding the drums was to give as true a representation as possible of what the drums actually sound like and to then give examples of what can be done to the sound of the drums.”

On Another Level Adds Former BBC presenter Ollie Winiberg-Bettell to Drum Show and Drummer’s Review Team

0

Organisers of The UK Drum Show, The Europe Drum Show (new for 2025) and publishers of the impartial online review platform Drummer’s Review, are thrilled to welcome former BBC presenter Ollie Winiberg-Bettell to the team, commencing the 1st January 2025.

“Having initially introduced Ollie to our visitors and exhibitors at The UK Drum Show 2023, as Main Stage host, it was clear, and to anyone that has come to meet Ollie since, is his infectious enthusiasm and passion for drums, drummers and drumming. Couple this to Ollie’s historical and successful presenting roles, along with the growing success of the official UK Drum Show Podcast he presents, Ollie will continue his roles as Main Stage host for both the UK and Europe Drum Shows, along with overseeing the growth and expansion of Podcasts for both events and will take the lead with artist video interviews for Drummer’s Review,” states Neil Golding organiser and publisher.

“I am completely elated to be joining this family run business and cannot wait to begin my new role in the new year.”

“With my hand on my heart, beginning this new chapter is one of the most exciting prospects I have ever encountered. I’ll be doing lots of travelling and chatting with drummers, percussionists and drum enthusiasts from all over the world to provide some fantastic content for you!”

“Since I can remember, drums have been my life. I started at the age of 2, sitting on my dads lap while he controlled the pedals and I did the stick work, and from the moment those sticks entered my hands, like many drummers, I became obsessed, and this passion has remained with me ever since.”

“For 13 years I presented on BBC Radio (Radio One, BBC Music Introducing, 1xtra, the Word Service, and lots more) and in 2021 I started my own podcast on Spotify called “The Heavy Hooks Show” . A program supporting both signed and unsigned rock and metal bands. It respectfully earned a place in the top 10% of most globally shared podcasts on Spotify, and I am incredibly proud of it.”

“In 2023 I hosted the main stage at the UK Drum Show and from there built a fantastic relationship (well, I’d say more friendship) with Neil, Sharon and the rest of the Golding family, and In early 2024 we started the UK Drum Show Official Podcast, interviewing main stage artists appearing at the event before the event itself in September ’24. This podcast felt like ‘home’ to me. I’m a massive drum geek, and chatting to these inspirational players felt so natural… (also, drummers have the BEST sense of humour!)”

“In my personal life, I am a huge fan of progressive rock and listening to anything with odd time signatures is a real musical turn on for me, but my music taste is varied. I love bands like Dream Theater, Haken, Pink Floyd, Genesis and Led Zeppelin, but I also really enjoy listening to film scores from the likes of Vangelis and John Williams. Additionally, discovering new music is a passion of mine too. And lastly, whilst Spinal Tap is my favourite film, I can promise I will try to avoid any bizarre gardening accidents…”

“My dad was the most amazing drummer and will forever be my drumming hero. He passed away in 2003, so it seems fitting to dedicate this announcement to my dear father, Michael Bettell.” Ollie Winiberg-Bettell.

Ollie will be attending NAMM 2025, so any relevant drum or percussion businesses wishing to meet Ollie in person, he is contactable on ollie@drummersreview.com

Istanbul Mehmet IMC Bronze Dark Cymbals Box Set – Reviewed

Here’s the latest video from the Drummer’s Review Live Room featuring a selection of Istanbul Mehmet IMC Bronze Dark cymbals box set.

Featuring…

  • 14″ Hi-Hats
  • 18″ Crash
  • 20″ Crash
  • 22″ Ride
  • B20 construction
  • Free cymbal bag included in price.

Filmed September 2024 at Paul Caboche Studios, Cornwall, UK. (scroll down for recording & equipment details)

“Overall and as a set they worked well together, but we have to say that we found these to be so niche that we’re not overly convinced of their place in the musical spectrum.”

Istanbul Mehmet Says…“Dry, dark sound with a fast response! This cymbals combines traditional craftsmanship with modern production technology and is, therefore, a high-quality set for beginners and advanced players.

Istanbul Mehmet IMC Bronze Dark Cymbal – Box Set: RRP: £837.50

“Each model has a black powder coating as well as extensive hammering to give a raw, almost trashy appearance with each cymbal medium medium-light in terms of weight and fairly thin.”

Pro’s:

  • Crashes make for excellent recording cymbals
  • Dark, dry sound may work really well for quiet acoustic music

Con’s:

  • Black powder coating comes off onto hands / clothes easily
  • Slightly too niche to be anything other than effects cymbals
“The two crashes sound great, with full, dark wash accompanying the initial explosion of sound they produce.”
