Pearl Redesigns and Expands its Legendary Philharmonic Series Concert Snare Drums

Belfeld, NL. Since 2000, Pearl has set the standard for legendary concert snare drum performance with the Philharmonic series of instruments. Pearl Introduces new features to this world-renowned line up including the new and improved SR505 Triad Silent Strainer including new wrap around assembly materials, new shell configurations, and timeless finishing touches for the next generation of players.

The New SR505 Triad Silent Strainer on every drum in the series is an upgraded and improved version of the world-renowned Philharmonic snare strainer developed after years of close collaboration with some of the world’s finest and most discriminating performing artists.

New features of the SR505 include: New Captive adjustment touchpoints and mechanical improvements of the three independently adjustable snare assemblies. New full wrap around guitar wire snare assemblies for ultimate sensitivity and tonal expression in the softest range of your playing. New Quick Release Snare mounting system maintains your individual adjustment settings on all three assemblies for fast and easy head replacement and maintenance.

The newest drum added to the Philharmonic series in 2021 is the amazing 20-ply, 18mm thick 100% Maple & Birch shell PHTRF model drums. The 20-ply maple drums produce the most articulate and cutting response from the entire Philharmonic Series and has an immediate presence in any hall. These incredible drums feature Pearl’s famous STL lugs and Die Cast hoops plated in lustrous Nickel. Each drum shell is hand finished in a classic #359 Twilight Burst, or the unique #187 Silver White Swirl.

The PHP series Ply Maple Philharmonics feature a new 8-ply 7.2mm 100% Maple shell configuration and are now upgraded with Nickle plated hardware. Stunning new finishes complete the package featuring #314 Barnwood Brown Burst, #405 Nicotine White Marine Pearl.

Pearl creates the first inlaid metal snare models with new Duoluxe Chrome/Brass drums.

Pearl presents Duoluxe: a modern take on the legendary, “inter-planetary” snare drum sound in celebration of three-quarters of a century of iconic drumming sounds and advancements. With the look and rigidity of our trademark dual inverted shell beads, Pearl takes the chrome-over-brass alloy shell of our classic Jupiter snare and inlays it with two finish bands of Nicotine White Marine Pearl. This gives the shell a distinct look and adds tonal control to its unbridled sound.

“This is not merely a reissue of the Jupiter Snare Drum,” states Steve Armstrong, Pearl Corporation Director of Marketing. “We wanted to give drummers that sound with current function. Though adding the inlays proved to be a unique challenge, the result makes it like playing a work of art!”

Our newly recast “Battleship” Lugs, smooth SR017 Strainer, and solid 2.3mm SuperHoop II triple-flanged hoops balance out the package for classically graceful drumming charisma.

Pearl’s DadoLoc construction creates a stronger drum shell for new StaveCraft snares.

Producing sharp sonic focus and full-bodied volume for the heavy player, StaveCraft snares are a stunning addition to any pro player’s drumming soundscape. These remarkable snare drums boast a mammoth 25mm thick shell made entirely of meticulously beveled solid exotic wood staves.

StaveCraft 14″ x 6.5″ Makha w/Thai Oak DadoLoc

The hidden gem in these snare drums lies in an old-world joining method called DadoLoc. This construction principle is exclusive to these snare drums, and the result is a shell that’s twice as strong and pushes the volume boundary over the cliff!

StaveCraft 14″ x5″ Makha w/Thai Oak DadoLoc

Like pieces in an intricate puzzle, each two-layer stave shell receives an added stave of alternating wood in the center Dado channel, increasing total shell strength by 50%. The shell is then lathed to a perfectly round 25mm thickness, hand-lacquered, and fitted with our Swivel Tube Lugs and MasterCast diecast counterhoops for added volume and tuning precision.

StaveCraft snare drums are available in two shell types (Makha Wood with Thai Oak DadoLoc or Thai Oak with Makha DadoLoc,) and two sizes for the perfect fusion of classic craftsmanship and new-school performance.

Periphery drummer Matt Halpern collaborates with Pearl on new Signature Snare

To match his aggressive drumming, Pearl Artist Matt Halpern designed each element of his Signature Snare Drum to complement -as well as contrast- the complex nature of his playing. Subtle touches, like black powder-coating and three shell vents, help temper the lively nature of its 1.5mm Brass shell.

Matt Halpern 14″x6″ Black-on-Brass Signature Snare Drum

“We worked really hard to put together the right combination of features to build a top-quality, incredible sounding snare drum,” said Matt upon completion of the project. “I’m humbled, honored, and excited at what we were able to achieve!” said Halpern.

MasterCast die-cast hoops boost projection, but Evans Heavyweight Dry heads deliver a yielding attack. Its STL150 ClipLock strainer provides increased sensitivity, while visual touches like black/brass STL Swivel Tube Lugs and striking yellow gaskets serve to inspire the ideal performance. The result is a snare drum with cutting, dry versatility that responds to quick and aggressive hits and fits in various styles and situations with an expanded tuning range.

Drummer’s Review Xtra: Interviewed – Keith Carlock

Session legend and go-to touring drummer for a wide range of stellar bands and musicians, Keith Carlock is proud to confirm the issue of his Signature Snare Drum designed and manufactured by Gretsch. Keith talks to Andy Hughes about the background to the new snare, and his thoughts on having his name on it.

How did the idea of a Signature Snare come about?

I attended a Gretsch event a few years ago, and I was chatting with Andrew Shreve who is their Artist Relations guy, and we talked about a Signature Snare Drum. The conversations carried on over a period of time, and eventually we progressed to design and production.

You must have played a large number of different snares made by different companies over the years, did that experience lead you to think that if you had a chance, you’d maybe change this part, or amend that part?

It did, yes, I’m pretty sure all pro drummers have their ideas for what they’d have if they could have a say in the design of a snare drum. I started out with the idea that I wanted a brass shell for the snare. I have played all different shells over the years, as you say, my career has given me the opportunity to try many kits and work out what suits me personally as a player. I have come to the conclusion that a brass shell is my favourite.

What other specific aspects did you discuss with the designers at Gretsch?

For the size of the snare, I specified a five-and-a-half-inch which is right in the middle of the range, and in my view, that gives the maximum level of versatility in the sonic boundaries of the snare sound. This drum sounds great in all tunings and pitches, with or without muffling, it has a really great middle range tone. I also wanted it to look like it was vintage, like it had been around a while, because for me that visual image suits the music that I play, because I play a lot of music that is rooted in the 1970’s era. I wanted the drum to look like it had lived a while.

We also discussed the shell thickness, I have a 2mm thin shell, and the bearing edge is at forty-five degrees. I also asked for twenty-strand snare wires, I prefer them to the thicker forty-two-strand wires. I also changed the lugs on the prototype – they offered me a smaller lug design which they do, but I prefer the standard lug size, so they changed those for me, and the snare has a ten-lug rim.

You also have the Gretsch Permatone standard drum head as well.

I do, it’s the coated one-ply head. Gretsch fit Permatone heads as standard on all their kits, and obviously anyone who buys this snare can swap it out for something else if they prefer, but I find that the Permatone suits me, so I saw no reason to change.

It is obviously about getting that distinctive Keith Carlock sound.

Exactly. I am sure that all pro drummers dream of a snare that completely captures the essence of their sound, and now I have one. I am really interested to see what the feedback is when the drum is out in the stores and people can try it out.

Have you had a chance to give the snare a good try-out?

I have indeed. I have been doing a lot of sessions from home using the new snare, and I have enjoyed a chance to try it in all situations, all tunings and permutations, and I am delighted that it has performed really well right through.

How many of your Signature snares have you got?

I am sure people imagine I have boxes and boxes of them around the house, but I actually just have two. One is the very first prototype which had the mini-lugs, which we changed to the standard lugs, and they are on the second prototype which is the one I have been playing since I got it. The manufacture is in progress, and once they hit the shops, I may get another one or two as spares, but for now, I am delighted with the one that I have.

Is there one particular tuning that you favour, that feels like your personal comfort zone?

There is, all professional musicians like myself are used to finding the tones and tunings that fit the circumstances we are in at the time, but equally, we all have our own particular favourites that feel more comfortable than some others. For me, I like a medium to high range sound. When I play with Steely Dan for example, I like a good high tone that will crack through the overall band sound and be heard clearly by the band and the audience. We are a thirteen-piece band and we play on large stages, so lower end sounds would just get lost and swallowed up, so I favour a clear higher end tone to do the job.

I would guess that you are really keen to take your new snare out on the road on tour, and see how it performs in a live concert context?

Absolutely! That’s a great point. I live in Nashville, and I have been able to take my snare to some studio sessions around town, and every time I have set it up and played it, the producer or the engineer or the musicians, and sometimes all of them, have commented on how great it sounds. I have had a lot of compliments on the sound, and that’s without me mentioning that it is a Signature model, and these guys hear all different drum sounds all day long, so I am really pleased that it is being noticed. As you say, the real test will be when I can get it out into a live situation and see how it performs, and what people think of it then.

Have you got the taste for further Signature products?

Maybe down the road a little. I haven’t got anything in mind right now, I am keen to see how this goes down first, so this is enough for now!

As a professional musician, you learn your craft, and develop your career, and your reputation grows up around you, but does having a Signature Snare confirm your value and status as a musician?

Definitely it does, yes. It’s an honour coming from Gretsch which is a company I respect and admire. It feels like getting a really important award, it’s a real feather in the cap, and I really hope that people like this Signature Snare as much as I do. As I said earlier, I know that all pro players have the experience to know what their perfect snare drum would sound like, and I am privileged to be able to have exactly that designed and made for me. I am very grateful to the Gretsch company and everyone involved in making this Signature snare, and I hope plenty of people get as much pleasure and enjoyment from playing it that I do.

Pearl Celebrates 75th Anniversary

0

Following World War II, Japan was in a national period of reconstruction. It was during this time a new company was born. On April 2, 1946, Katsumi Yanagisawa founded Pearl in a small backyard workshop in Sumida-Ku Tokyo. Today this leading drum companies headquarters is 50 kilometers away in Chiba, Japan.

Katsumi Yanagisawa founded Pearl.

The first products produced by Pearl were music stands made for the local Japanese market. As his reputation for quality craftmanship grew, Katsumi was urged to begin building drums. By 1953, the company made drum sets, marching and concert drums, timpani, cymbals, and Latin percussion instruments.

Images from Japan Factory 1956

From such humble beginnings, this fledgling company would progress to become a dominant leader in musical instrument manufacturing, holding scores of patents the world over. The gearless tilter, the drum rack, and the interchangeable cam system are just a few of the innovations from Pearl. Drum set series like Masters, Session, and the fully customizable Masterworks Series have all become legendary. Pearl’s hardware staples like the Eliminator and Demon Drive pedals plus its concert and marching series drums have become the standards by which all others are measured. Add a few of the many dynamic electronic innovations like Mimic Pro and eMerge it has been a very busy 75 years.

1961 Chiba Japan Factory

In 1961 Pearl built a 15,000 square foot factory in Chiba, Japan, to handle the increasing demand for its products that exemplified superior Japanese manufacturing. In the beginning, this factory produced drums for over 30 OEM brands to be distributed by others throughout the world. These kits carried various brand names, and many drummers started their careers playing Pearl and never knew it.

1967 President Series Advert

For twenty years, Pearl would continue to build drums for other companies.  In 1966, Pearl introduced the “President Series,” the first professional drum set to carry the Pearl logo. From that point forward, the name Pearl would become synonymous with the finest drums the world had to offer. In celebration of Pearl’s history of quality and craftsmanship, President Series makes a triumphant return in a Limited Edition, 75th Anniversary drum set. “The President Series Phenolic drums feature the tonal articulation and feel of the original with a modern classic retool” states Terry West, President of Pearl Corporation USA.

For generations, Pearl master artisans have developed unique proprietary manufacturing techniques that separate the company from others. With strict Japanese manufacturing preciseness and accuracy, every process has been perfected to produce the finest instruments possible. These exacting standards have also been applied to the production of Pearl’s handcrafted flute lines for over 50 years.

In 1973, Pearl expanded its manufacturing capabilities with a 93,000 square foot state-of-the-art manufacturing facility located within the export zone of Taichung, Taiwan. In 1980, this factory would be responsible for introducing the legendary Export Series drum set to the world, and to this day, Export remains the number one selling drum set of all time.

Due to its Japanese advantage, many innovations have followed the Export series, with Pearl developments elevating the art of quality drum making. As these skills are defined by one generation of master artisans, they are refined and passed down to the next, staying true to Katsumi’s mantra to build lasting value and prestige.

Max Iishi new President and Chief Executive Officer

“After 75 years, our commitment remains the same, to build instruments that have lasting value and prestige. Today, our challenge is to continue to work just like a new start-up company and to possess the same spirit and drive that began 75 years ago with Katsumi Yanagisawa,” said Max Iishi, President and CEO, Pearl Musical Instruments.

Pearl Musical Instruments, (PMI) is a worldwide leading manufacturer of acoustic and electronic drums, concert and marching percussion instruments, hand percussion, and flutes. Eventide Announce MicroPitch Delay Pedal

0

Eventide have announced the latest addition to their compact pedal range, the MicroPitch Delay.

The MicroPitch Delay algorithm has been a mainstay of audio production and musical performance since it was first introduced within the legendary H910 and H949 effects processors. Its subsequent appearance in the H3000 Harmonizer® further popularized the effect and cemented its place in musical history as a quintessential studio tool. Now players can harness the power of this iconic Eventide effect with the MicroPitch Delay pedal, which offers a unique combination of dual pitch-shifters with fine-resolution de-tuning, delay and modulation – including new positive envelope and negative envelope modulation sources. Its distinctive architecture yields a wide breadth of sonic applications ranging from subtle tone thickening to creating a rich stereo spread to a host of creative sound design special effects. The rugged, gig-ready red MicroPitch Delay pedal is not just for guitars the pedal brings unparalleled dimension to any source from vocals to keyboards to drums, strings, brass and winds.

Users can choose from dozens of Eventide presets to load via MIDI, which are also accessible in the preset list on the Eventide Device Manager (EDM – a Windows or Mac OS X application for software updates, system settings and creating/saving presets).

The pedal can store up to 127 presets in memory, with five presets loaded at a player’s feet for access from a latching/momentary dual-action Active Footswitch with a Catch-up mode to help players dial in their sound when toggling between presets/parameters. A single Aux switch can be deployed to Tap Tempo, or a triple Aux switch can be used for easy preset changing (up/down/load). The MicroPitch Delay Pedal offers multiple Bypass options: Buffered, Relay, DSP+FX or Kill dry. MIDI capability is available over TRS (for use with a MIDI to TRS cable or converter box) or USB. The rear-panel Guitar/Line Level switch allows level-matching with guitars, synths, FX loops or DAW interfaces. Any combination of MicroPitch Delay parameters can be mapped to an Expression pedal.
