Gretsch Introduces Limited Edition Classic Renown 57 Drum Kit

Gretsch Drums, introduce, for one year only, the Renown 57 – Silver Oyster Pearl; a new breed in the coveted drum series.

In January, 2011, Gretsch Drums went against the grain and conventional design when the company introduced the special edition Renown 57 drum set. The unique look, thanks to its classic car colors and the chevron logo, immediately became a hit throughout the world. Despite not being manufactured for some years, Gretsch still receives regular order requests for these much loved, limited edition kits.

Only available in 2021, this versatile Renown kit features the 7-ply maple shell, 30 degree bearing edges, 302 double flange hoops, silver sealer interiors and Low Profile GTS system. The new Renown 57 has silver oyster inlay hoops and traditional 14” depth bass drums with no mounts, the most frequent request made by Gretsch enthusiasts.

The Renown 57, Silver Oyster Pearl Nitron finish, is available in two configurations:

Meinl Announce Anika Nilles Split Tone Practice Pad

Meinl are pleased to announce the availability of the Anika Nilles Split Tone Practice Pad.

The Split Tone Pad consists of three distinct surfaces that offer different feels and volume levels, along with a reduced rebound section on the back.  It is designed to train more than a simple rudiment.  With the Split Tone Pad, you can creatively mold your own systematic approach to advance your consistency, accuracy in unisons, hand independence and muscle strength. The power of this pad is in its ability to train your ears and mind for a better understanding of rhythms.

Features
1.        The primary pad (middle) has a regular tone and feel. Here, you can practice your hand exercises normally.

2.        The secondary pads (red dots) have a higher tone compared to the primary pad. Switching between using only your left or right hand in these areas with the opposite hand in the middle splits your hands into two different sounds, which enables you to hear familiar rhythms from a different perspective.

3.        The soft oval shape near the top is the muted section. By playing your full patterns on the primary pad and moving one hand at a time to this section, you hear the opposite hand very strong and loud while the hand playing the muted area becomes silent.  This allows you to focus your attention strongly on one hand to pinpoint and smooth out any weakness.

4.        The workout pad on the back has a special surface with less rebound to warm up your muscles quickly and gain power. This side also doubles as a non-slip layer when playing the pad on flat surfaces.

Meinl Introduce Chris Coleman C Squared 21″ Ride

The C2 (C Squared) ride was designed in collaboration with Meinl Cymbals artist Chris Coleman, and it perfectly blends the elements that Chris needed from multiple ride cymbals into a versatile yet powerful 21” ride cymbal. Starting with a heavy blank, the bow is worked into to a high profile; this combination of weight and shape work together to accentuate the desired stick articulation and presence. The holes around the edge are an uncommon feature found on ride cymbals, but they were added to control the wash and sustain that larger cymbals generate and to further augment the definition Chris desired to stand out in the mix. While the bell is thick enough to cut through any band, the hand-hammering gives it a warm and earthy tonality for a more musical punch. The overall extraordinary look of this cymbal with its raw, unlathed surface and holes combined with its intense sound will make everyone take notice when you add it to your kit.

DW Unveils Dave Grohl Icon Snare Drum

Drum Workshop Inc. (DW) recently announced the addition of a Dave Grohl ICON snare drum to the coveted line. The limited-edition drum recognizes his celebrated drumming career, as well as his long- standing connection with both the legendary Sound City recording studio in Los Angeles, and his beloved Studio 606, where the sacred Sound City console now resides. Grohl’s love of Sound City began when he recorded at the storied studio with Nirvana on their breakthrough release Nevermind.  More recently, Grohl produced, directed and narrated the award-winning documentary of the same name.

The wood inlay artwork adorning the Dave Grohl Icon snare includes the rock visionary’s stylized silhouette, his forearm feather tattoos and fitting tribute to both aforementioned recording studios. Precisely laser-cut from 1/36″ veneers of Black Pear and Sycamore woods, the images are painstakingly hand-inlayed into a background of teal-dyed Exotic Birdseye Maple. The drum is only hand-sprayed with a clear gloss to topcoat—no paint has been used to depict the graphics on the outer veneer.  Nickel-plated drum hardware complements the unique, eye-catching color scheme.

In addition to being a prized collectable, the drum is also highly playable. Crafted at the DW Custom Shop in California, from 11-plies of North American Hard Rock Maple with VLT grain orientation technology; the drum is fitted with True-Hoops™, True-Pitch 50 Tuning™, True-Tone Snare Wires™, MAG throw-off with 3P butt plate and DW Heads by Remo®. A Deluxe DW carrying case, certificate of authenticity and Sound City hat are also included.

‘We’d been waiting a long time to present this special project to Dave,’ said DW drum designer John Good. ‘When he saw the drum for the first time, we couldn’t have asked for a more amazing reaction. We finally get to share this with the world, and we know his fans will appreciate the thought and effort put into this very special ICON drum.’

Commenting on the new snare drum Grohl said “I’d like to thank everybody at DW, as this is something that blows my mind.  I’ve never had my own snare drum before, and this is pretty beautiful.”

Only 250 of the Dave Grohl ICON snare drums will ever be produced—each one will be numbered and signed by John Good. A portion of proceeds from the sale of each snare will be donated to the charity nominated by Grohl, National Independent Venue Association.
