A Note From Paul…

“The microphones were set up with the overheads and room mic’s measured to the centre of the snare drum to keep the phase of any stereo pair in phase. The AEA R88 MK2 mic’s being stereo mic’s had no issue with phase but the front centre room mic and centre overhead where aligned with each other to keep the same stereo image. The phase reverse switch on the front kick mic was used to correct the phase between the two bass drum mic’s. The phase reverse switch was engaged on the bottom snare mic to correct the phase between the two snare mic’s. Hi pass filters only used on the hi hat mic, Ride mic and overheads. The live room of the studio has been treated to provide a neutral sound close to the drums & cymbals with the room mic’s then giving a true representation of what the instruments sound like in the room. Using 16 identical Mic Pre amps also helps with electrical phase so there is no difference between tone and phase of the Mic Pre amps. The brief for the recoding was to give as true a representation as possible of what the instruments actually sound like.”

Latin Percussion Introduce Alex Van Halen Signature 8” Cowbell

0

Latin Percussion (LP) is delighted to introduce the new Alex Van Halen Signature 8” Cowbell.

Alex Van Halen, drummer and co-founder of the influential rock band Van Halen, has a unique playing style and exceptional timing. His new memoir, Brothers, tells the story of one of rock’s closest family partnerships and is published in October of 2024. Famously, in the intro to Dance the Night Away, Alex uses a cowbell to set the tone of the whole song.

The new, American-made Alex Van Halen Signature 8” Cowbell is based on the classic LP Bongo Cowbell. The chrome-plated, mountable bell is embossed with Alex’s signature and the iconic Van Halen logo. It is fitted with the patented Jenigor Ridge Rider Bar for dampening and durability and the patented, self-aligning eye-bolt that mounts to any 3/8” to ½” diameter rod. It pumps out high pitch sound with dry overtones making it great for punching accents into any big groove. “I have loved every minute of working with LP to create my signature cowbell,” said Alex, “It’s incredibly versatile, and its distinctive ‘tonk’ will add to the sonic landscape of almost any genre of music.”

To paraphrase the ageless Saturday Night Live skit, ‘Maybe your life needs more cowbell?

“Overall the kit gave a pretty good account of itself. At this price point it certainly competes with other similar offerings available on the market, and we have to say the high gloss lacquer finish looks stunning. “

DrumCraft Says…“The Series 4 is the perfect choice for the intermediate drummer. Whether you’re in the studio, on the stage or shooting for your Instagram, the Series 4 offers high performance and a stunning tone. The lacquer finishes with black hardware offer a sophisticated and striking look in a mixture of colours and moods.

“In terms of build quality the kit is pretty good. There are a few slight rattles here and there particularly at a low tuning, which does take a little while to fully dial out…”

(* price correct at time of filming)

“With an online price of approximately £770.00, we feel this kit is really well priced and good value for money.”

  • Sherwood Green Fade, High Gloss Lacquer finish looks stunning

Full Studio Mix:

A Note From Paul…

“The microphones were set up with the overheads and room mic’s measured to the centre of the snare drum to keep the phase of any stereo pair in phase. The AEA R88 MK2 mic’s being stereo mic’s had no issue with phase but the front centre room mic and centre overhead where aligned with each other to keep the same stereo image. The phase reverse switch was engaged on the bottom snare mic to correct the phase between the two snare mic’s. Hi pass filters only used on the hi hat mic, Ride mic and overheads. The AKG C414B mic’s on the toms have very little proximity bass boost so can be considered a pretty flat representation of the toms. The same can be said for the Electrovoice PL80 mic’s on the snare drum. Every effort was made so that the NO EQ sound example audio on the video was as true a representation of what the drums sounded like in the live room. The live room of the studio has been treated to also provide a neutral sound close to the drums with the room mic’s then giving a true representation of what the drums sound like in the room. Using 16 identical Mic Pre amps also helps with electrical phase so there is no difference between tone and phase of the Mic Pre amps. The brief for recoding the drums was to give as true a representation as possible of what the drums actually sound like and to then give examples of what can be done to the sound of the drums.”

Roland Announces V-Drums Quiet Design

0
Roland announces V-Drums Quiet Design, an all-new addition to the company’s award-winning V-Drums product lineup. V-Drums Quiet Design is a revolutionary development in home drumming, delivering the lowest playing noise in the history of electronic drum kits. Born of decades of Roland testing and development, the V-Drums Quiet Design pads, stand, and pedal bases work together to keep in-home playing sounds and vibration transfer in check without sacrificing feel and response. The VQD106 kit comes ready to play with the TD-07 module, while the VQD106PADS kit allows users to add the V-Drums module of their choice. V-Drums Quiet Design components are also available separately for pad expansion and upgrading other V-Drums kits.

Roland V-Drums are already some of the quietest electronic drums available, thanks to years of research and development, precision engineering, and the ability to monitor with headphones. Yet even standard V-Drums can sometimes be too loud to enjoy. The physical noise of striking pads can be bothersome for others, and pedals transfer low-end thumps and vibrations that resonate through the structure to create noise in other rooms.
Purposely engineered for maximum noise reduction, V-Drums Quiet Design allows drummers to play without restraint at any time, day or night. Newly developed pads and hardware dramatically lower the in-room volume, while sound-absorbing materials isolate drumming energy to prevent its escape into adjoining spaces. Detailed testing in special facilities has revealed that V-Drums Quiet Design kits reduce noise by an astonishing 75 percent compared with conventional V-Drums. The kick and hi-hat are incredibly smooth and quiet, and stick hits on the pads produce in-room sound levels similar to an average conversation.
PDQ-8S
Despite all their advanced noise-reducing features, the V-Drums Quiet Design snare and toms deliver the great stick feel and natural rebound that V-Drums pads are famous for. The PDQ-8S snare and three PDQ-8 tom pads are built with a noise-absorbing honeycomb rubber insert covered with a mesh head. Specially placed vents on the underside of the playing surface allow air pressure to dissipate, further reducing noise. The PDQ-8S snare provides independent head and rim triggering, plus a soft rubber covering on the rim for quiet rimshots.
PDQ-8 Tom front and rear
Each V-Drums Quiet Design kit includes three versatile CYQ-12 cymbal pads built with honeycomb rubber, mesh covering, and venting like the snare and tom pads. In the crash and ride positions, the CYQ-12 provides independent bow and edge triggers, natural swinging motion, and support for cymbal chokes. In the hi-hat position, the pad is paired with the FD-9 control pedal for detailed response and ultra-quiet operation.
CYQ-12
The KDQ-8 kick pad delivers the satisfying “thud” every drummer wants—while keeping the sound confined within the headphones. The eight-inch playing surface supports single and double kick pedals and features a dense triple-layer cushion covered in a double-ply mesh material. This is housed in a floating frame to reduce vibration and noise transfer. Four rubber feet provide stability and further isolation, while the included KDB-Q quiet beater has a special round head that minimises contact noise.
KDB-Q
An innovative stand and two pedal bases complete the V-Drums Quiet Design experience, keeping the remaining clicks, thumps, and vibrations from transferring to the floor and other rooms. Special hemispherical rubber feet on the stand isolate pad noise, while the dedicated NEQ-K and NEQ-H bases for kick and hi-hat pedals also have special rubber foot designs to keep foot stomps contained.
NEQ-H and K (feet)
The TD-07 module included with the VQD106 kit features high-quality acoustic and electronic drum sounds captured in pro studios and powered by advanced V-Drums technology. Users can personalize kits by swapping drums, adjusting tunings, adding dampening, and using EQ. Built-in Bluetooth supports audio streaming from a mobile device for jamming and following video lessons. USB connectivity is also available to record audio and MIDI in a DAW, trigger computer-based instruments, and integrate with Melodics™ coaching software for V-Drums.
Availability & Pricing

The Roland V-Drums Quiet Design is available in the U.S. now for $1,799.99 (VQD106 kit) and $1,599.99 (VQD106PADS).

UK Drum Show Exclusive – Roland Announces V-Drums 7 Series to be Displayed at The UK Drum Show 2024

0
Roland announces the V-Drums 7 Series, the new flagship tier in the company’s award-winning V-Drums product lineup. The V-Drums 7 Series opens a dynamic new chapter in the V-Drums legacy, elevating the world’s leading electronic drums with a reimagined sound module, next-generation pads, and enhanced creative tools. The user-expandable V71 module features an all-new multi-sampled sound library created in collaboration with Drum Workshop (DW), plus the ability to browse and download new sound content via integrated Wi-Fi connectivity and the Roland Cloud Connect mobile app. The new VAD716, TD716, and TD713 kits offer the V71 in versatile configurations with Roland’s latest digital and analog pads. Module and kit purchases come with six months of Roland Cloud Ultimate membership, providing untethered access to DW Soundworks, V-Drums Instrument Expansions, and other curated content for serious drummers.

V-Drums have long been the go-to choice for the world’s top professional drummers. Butch Vig is the drummer for Garbage, and his production credits include Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth, and many other iconic artists. He’s a longtime V-Drums player who’s used them on stage and in the studio for years.
Recently, Roland invited Butch and Deftones drummer Abe Cunningham—another veteran V-Drums user—to create a recording project with the V-Drums 7 Series at Dave Grohl’s Studio 606. “There’s hundreds of killer, totally custom kits in there already,” Butch relates. “One of the things I’ve noticed about the new software is that some of the ambiance in the new kits, especially the legacy kits, sounds reminiscent of Sound City,” referring to the legendary Los Angeles recording space where he produced Nirvana’s Nevermind album in 1991.

V71 Drum Sound Module
The V71 is Roland’s deepest and most advanced V-Drums sound module to date. The famous hands-on workflow remains, but everything else has been overhauled, rebuilt, and refreshed. Ultra-powerful DSP and greatly expanded waveform memory unlock a universe of new possibilities. Operation is smoother and faster than ever, thanks to the vivid color display, tactile controls, and ergonomic panel layout.

The V71’s onboard drum library has been created from the ground up with world-class instruments never featured in any previous module. It was originally recorded and mixed at 32-bit/192 kHz resolution in pro studios around the globe, with sessions manned by leading audio engineers known for their great drum sounds. A large part of the collection was recorded in direct collaboration with DW at their studio in Oxnard, California.
Like premium drum sound libraries for computers, the V71 provides multi-layer sample playback and round-robin randomization for natural sound with no “machine-gun” effect. Roland’s proprietary behavior modeling adds the finishing touch, refining the sound with smooth, artifact-free transitions for every articulation and over 16,000 variations in dynamic response with Roland digital pads.
V-Edit tools allow users to adjust any drum or cymbal just like an acoustic instrument, from head types, dampening, and tuning to snare wire tension, mic distance, and much more. The V71 also provides comprehensive audio connectivity, studio-grade processing, sample import support, and other options for crafting kits, personalizing sounds, and interfacing with external gear.
DW Soundworks and Sound Expansion Options on Roland Cloud
The V-Drums 7 Series platform offers two ways to play: the V71 module’s expandable sound library and DW Soundworks software for computer-based drumming. The included six months of Roland Cloud Ultimate membership provides full access to DW Soundworks and related content, V-Drums Instrument Expansions, V-Drums Kit Packs, and more. Users can subscribe after the trial ends or purchase their favorite selections with Lifetime Keys.
DW Soundworks is a revolutionary drum software instrument that runs as a standalone computer application or a DAW plug-in. The software’s core library features samples from many DW kits, and there’s a growing selection of expansion packs available on Roland Cloud. V-Drums Instrument Expansions allow users to add new sounds to the V71 module, including complete multi-sampled acoustic drum sets, vintage and modern electronic sounds, and more. Many DW Soundworks expansion packs mirror V-Drums Instrument Expansion titles, ensuring a seamless transition between hardware and software-based drumming.
VAD716 V-Drums Acoustic Design Kit
The VAD716 brings V-Drums 7 Series power to a flagship V-Drums Acoustic Design kit, with real wood shells and chrome hardware that project the premium look of high-end acoustic drums. The kit features the next-generation PD-14DSX snare, which advances Roland’s digital pad technology with even more detailed sensing and snare throw-off hardware. Roland’s digital VH-14D hi-hat and CY-18DR ride pads are also included, providing ultra-detailed playability for the three most expressive instruments in any kit.
The new KD-22 kick pad offers a full-depth wood shell, an innovative drumhead-mounted sensor, and numerous hardware enhancements for stability and durability. The six-piece VAD716 also includes 10-inch PDA100 and 12-inch PDA120 rack toms, two 14-inch PDA140F floor toms, and two 16-inch CY-16R-T V-Cymbals.
The VAD716 kit is available in many attractive finishes, including Pearl White painted gloss, walnut veneer in Satin Walnut, and maple veneer in transparent Gloss Cherry, Gloss Ebony, and Gloss Natural.
TD716 and TD713 V-Drums Kits
The TD716 and TD713 are modern electronic kits with the V71 module and the latest Roland low-profile pads. Like the VAD716, these kits feature the new PD-14DSX digital snare, VH-14D digital hi-hat, and CY-18DR digital ride.
TD716
The TD716 comes with the newly developed KD-18-BK kick pad, offering acoustic looks and playability with a full-depth wood shell and an innovative drumhead-mounted sensor. A four-piece tom array includes the new ten-inch PD-10X and 12-inch PD-12X pads, which feature multi-sensor systems for trigger accuracy and hot spot elimination. Rounding out this powerhouse kit are two 16-inch CY-16R-T V-Cymbals and the MDS-STG2 stand.
TD713
The streamlined TD713 kit features the KD-12, a new kick pad with a satisfying playing feel and a compact profile for easy placement. Four 10-inch PDX-100 tom pads, a 16-inch CY-16R-T V-Cymbal, a 14-inch CY-14R-T V-Cymbal, and the MDS-GND2 stand complete the kit.
Availability & Pricing
The Roland V-Drums 7 Series will be available in the U.S. starting in October, with pricing as follows: $2,599.99 for the V71, $6,333.99 for the TD713, $7,999.99 for the TD716, and $8,999.99 for the VAD716.

Custom IEMs, like those from ACS Custom, are specifically moulded to fit each individual’s ear shape, ensuring maximum comfort and minimal sound leakage. This is vital for drummers who are often exposed to intense noise levels, whether during live shows or rehearsals. The ability to control what you hear while blocking out unwanted external noise allows for more precise playing and better protection against hearing damage.

Unlike universal-fit monitors, which can slip or cause discomfort during long performances, custom-fit IEMs remain secure and comfortable throughout.

ACS Custom‘s soft silicon material further enhances the comfort level, making it ideal for long performances and touring musicians.

Why Top Drummers Choose ACS Custom IEMs

ACS Custom has been at the forefront of creating industry-leading in-ear monitoring solutions for musicians. Their handmade in the UK IEMs provide unrivalled quality, featuring a multi-driver setup that ensures exceptional sound fidelity across all frequencies. Whether it’s the deep thump of the kick drum or the subtle resonance of the hi-hats, ACS Custom IEMs provide drummers with a clear, precise sound mix that enhances their performance.

One of the most recent high-profile drummers to endorse ACS Custom is Dre Energy, a world-renowned artist known for his dynamic style and international performances. Dre began his musical journey at just two years old and has since captivated audiences around the world. He has performed with Cirque du Soleil, starred in the American Idol Tour, and led masterclasses across the globe, including in countries like China, Israel, and the UK.
