Audio Template Details:

No EQ:

Direct microphone sound – no EQ either pre or post recording applied from the Neve 5052 Pre-Amps EQ section.

Basic EQ:

Basic EQ setting using the EQ section of the Neve 5052 mic Pre-Amps. No post recoded EQ or processing applied.

Full Studio Mix:

Post EQ section of the Neve 5052 mic Pre-Amps plus post production EQ, gating, parallel compression and some reverb added to the snare and toms. There was also some room mic processing along with parallel drum bus adding compression and reverb to the overall sound.

A Note From Paul…

“The microphones were set up with the overheads and room mic’s measured to the centre of the snare drum to keep the phase of any stereo pair in phase. The AEA R88 MK2 mic’s being stereo mic’s had no issue with phase but the front centre room mic and centre overhead where aligned with each other to keep the same stereo image. The phase reverse switch on the front kick mic was used to correct the phase between the two bass drum mic’s. The phase reverse switch was engaged on the bottom snare mic to correct the phase between the two snare mic’s. Hi pass filters only used on the hi hat mic, Ride mic and overheads. The AKG C414B mic’s on the toms have very little proximity bass boost so can be considered a pretty flat representation of the toms. The same can be said for the Electrovoice PL80 mic’s on the snare drum. Every effort was made so that the NO EQ sound example audio on the video was as true a representation of what the drums sounded like in the live room. The live room of the studio has been treated to also provide a neutral sound close to the drums with the room mic’s then giving a true representation of what the drums sound like in the room. Using 16 identical Mic Pre amps also helps with electrical phase so there is no difference between tone and phase of the Mic Pre amps. The brief for recoding the drums was to give as true a representation as possible of what the drums actually sound like and to then give examples of what can be done to the sound of the drums.”

Obituary – Aaron Spears

0

Drummer’s Review is sad to report the death of drummer Aaron Spears at the age of forty-seven.

As a child, Aaron grew up attending his local church, and it was there that he would wait for a chance to sit in with the church band.

Aaron achieved the break he had been waiting for when he was twenty-three, and he joined the Gideon Band, a local band in his home of Washinton DC. Thanks to national touring with the band, Aaron came to the attention of Valdez Brantley, Musical Director for R ‘n’ B legend Usher. Aaron contributed to two tracks on Usher’s multi-platinum Confessions album, and toured with him for the following eighteen months. Following the success of the album, Aaron was nominated for a Grammy Award.

His high-level profile now established, Aaron has taken his drumming skills and enhanced the music of a large list of high-profile artists, including Ariana Grande, Britney Spears, Chaka Khan, Lady Gaga, and others, as well as backing James Brown during a live showcase at the Grammy Awards.

One of Aaron’s last positions was as the Music Coordinator and band drummer for the American TV Series The Masked Singer.

As a musician, Aaron Spears was highly regarded by fans and contemporaries alike for his skill as a drummer, particularly his ‘ins the pocket’ style which added an infectious groove and rhythm to any piece of music on which he played. Added to that his ability to explode into a cascade of rhythmic intensity, and Aaron was known as a drummer of exceptional talent. Aaron was known for his considerable versatility as a player, turning his ability to gospel, jazz, r ‘n’ b, and jazz.

Aaron was also a keen advocate of education, holding regular drum clinics and drum camps, and always offering encouragement to young players.

Personally, Aaron always maintained and enjoyed discussing his deep commitment to his Christian faith. Having been raised in the Pentecostal Church, Aaron always attributed his talent and his success to his beliefs.

At the time of writing, no confirmed information is available as to the cause of Aaron’s death, other than information on Facebook advising that he passed away a few days ago.

Aaron is survived by his wife Valentine, and his young son Gus.

Drummer’s Review extends sincere condolences to Aaron’s family, friends, and his many colleagues in the music industry, who mourn the passing of such an amazingly talented, and humble musician.

ANDY HUGHES.

Tim Wilson

Tim Wilson adds, “I can’t wait to get the ZEN CAN Studio out on the road when IO Earth tours to support our latest album ‘Sanctuary’ and in a few weeks when I am playing with Dave Curton in the support slot for The Winery Dogs in the Netherlands. It will be great to really put it through its paces and I am very confident that it is going be hugely beneficial to my monitoring on stage and I look forward to telling others how I use their amazing products in the studio and on the road.”

The ZEN CAN Studio is a high-quality IEM amplifier, which can be mounted on a mic stand and located conveniently by the drummer’s side, thanks to its underside mic 5/8” mounting socket. Packed full technology, the ZEN CAN Studio is compatible with all IEMs and headphones, including even the most power-hungry models. Its mixture of balanced and unbalanced inputs provides maximum connection flexibility, whether working in the studio or live on the road.

RTOM LV Practice Heads – Drummer’s Review

Here’s our latest review featuring a selection of RTOM LV Practice Mesh Heads. Filmed September 2023 (scroll down for recording & equipment details).

Featuring…

  • 22″ bass drum head,
  • 10″ & 12″ rack tom heads,
  • 16″ floor tom head,
  • 14″ snare head,
  • centre dot for reinforced attack and durability.

UK RRP: Beginner’s Pack (22″,10″,12″,14″,16″) – £162.00

RTOM Says…”Similar to comparable mesh heads, LV Mesh Heads replace your existing acoustic heads to allow for low-volume drumming. But that’s where the similarities end. LV Mesh Heads feature a specially designed sound patch at the center of the head, which enhances the realism of the response and provides a more audible attack. And, like the Black Hole Practice System, their heavy-duty mesh material offers unparalleled durability.

LV Mesh Heads are an exceptional option for drummers on a budget who want to outfit their entire kit with a high-quality, low-volume practice solution.”
