DW Introduces All-New Performance Series Matte Lacquer Finishes

Drum Workshop Inc. (DW) has added two modern colour choices to its popular range of Performance Series drums.  In addition to previous sprayed lacquer options, drummers can now choose from two exciting, new matte lacquer colors, Metallic Charcoal and Gold Mist.

Utilizing Pure Maple shells that are hand-crafted at DW’s California Custom Shop,  the boutique-inspired line features many of the company’s professional features such as patented HVX shell technology, True-Pitch™ Tuning, STM Suspension Tom Mount System™, MAG Throw-Off™ with 3P adjustment, DW Heads by Remo and more.

The Series is played by many of DW’s top artists and has been part of the DW Drums line for well over a decade. John Good, DW’s Executive Vice President and Drum Designer comments, “We’re so proud of how this Series has evolved over the years.  For those that want a top-quality instrument made from our finest North American Hard Rock Maple but don’t want to enter into the custom world, this is a perfect choice.”

Both Finishes include a pearlescent look, combined with an understated satin topcoat; all are fitted with the recognizable DW “Quarter Turret Lug” and pro-grade, chrome hardware.

Joel Barford joins Mike Dolbear line-up at The UK Drum Show 2022

Joel Barford joins a growing list of talent to to appear in the Mike Dolbear masterclass room, when The UK Drum Show returns at its new home, the ACC Liverpool on the 2 & 3 April.

Joel is a young, well respected up-and-coming drummer in the U.K. scene based in London. Joel is known primarily for playing jazz amongst many other genres. Joel is one third of the award winning Nigel Price Organ Trio where they heavily tour the U.K playing in jazz clubs up and down the country. He is also known for playing for/with a variety of artists such as Anthony Strong, Ashton Jones, Ian Livingstone, Tom Seals, Ross Stanley, Chris Montague, Alex Garnett, Ant Law, Sam Leak, Alex Hitchcock, National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO), CC Smugglers, Greg Coulson, Derek Nash, Dave O’Higgins, John Etheridge, Lucy Merrilyn, Liane Carroll and many more.

Joel is routed in the tradition of jazz. He is at his best when given the opportunity to improvise, create and express himself through the music. Taking inspiration from the likes of Bill Stewart, Gregory Hutchinson, Elvin Jones, Jack Dejohnette, Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts, Brian Blade, Mark Guiliana, Tony Williams and Keith Carlock. Joel is a regular performer at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club where on occasion, hosts his own show under his own name.

As well as his love for jazz, he is also known as a session musician playing all kinds of styles from blues to pop to funk to Latin to fusion. Joel has toured round the world playing festivals such as North Sea Jazz Festival (NL), Rock Wertcher (BE), Colours of Ostrava (CZE) and TW Classic (BE) with CC Smugglers where they were given the opportunity to open for Bruce Springsteen.

Joel endorses Canopus Drums, Vic Firth and Zildjian.

Drum Workshop Inc. (DW) is extending its range of custom Collector’s Series®  snare drums with the introduction of the Ultralight Edge™ snare. Super lightweight, it is crafted from Space Carbon™, a high-grade material that is upcycled from private sector space program manufacturing.

The new 5.5 x 14” Ultralight Edge™ snare is assembled by hand at the California Custom Shop using the same tried and tested Edge™ construction. It utilizes a carbon weave cylinder fitted precisely over machined aluminum Edge™ rings, creating a high-tech hybrid that delivers brightness, articulation, volume, sensitivity and unique tonality of its own. It can be customized in any of five DW Custom Shop drum hardware color options. The Space Carbon™ center makes this the lightest of all the Edge snares.

Tascam Announce New-Generation High-Resolution Multitrack Handheld Recorder

Tascam has announced the Portacapture X8, its latest generation portable eight-track audio recorder. The handy device enables recordings with 32-bit floating point resolution and sampling rates up to 192 kHz and is operated via a 3.5-inch (8.9 cm) touchscreen. Thanks to the intuitive Launcher feature, the user can easily select from a range of recoding apps that offer the best audio settings based on the recording scenario, enabling them to get started quickly without having to wade through complicated menus. At time of launch, the device offers six configurations for a wide variety of recording uses, including multitrack recording, interview, podcast, music recording and field recording. Tascam has also included ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response), which is popular in certain communities for recording unusual, sensual sounds.

The Portacapture X8 comes with two detachable microphones with 14.6-mm diaphragms that can be mounted in either AB or XY orientation. Together with Tascam’s proprietary HDDA preamplifiers, they are said to provide the best conditions for excellent recordings. In addition, there are four XLR/TRS combo jacks for microphone and line level signals as well as Aux In and Line Out, which can optionally serve as audio input and output for a camera. The level of the camera output can be adjusted to the requirements of the respective model, whilst functions for marks and slate tones are also available.

The DSP functions of the Portacapture X8 include compressor, limiter, low-cut filter, noise gate, reverb, automatic level adjustment and more. Settings can be made via simplified or advanced pages within the user interface. Tascam has also made provision for a remote control: if the user connects the optional AK-BT1 Bluetooth adapter into the device and installs the free Portacapture Control app, they can control their recordings from practically any Android or iOS device.

The combination of an 8-channel recorder (6 tracks + stereo mix) and a USB interface with eight inputs and two outputs makes the new Tascam Portacapture X8 a fully equipped handheld recorder that offers a wealth of possibilities, both independently and in combination with a computer. For monitoring, a built-in loudspeaker is available in addition to the headphones output. The Portacapture X8 can be used with microSD, microSDHC and microSDXC cards with up to 512 GBytes.

On March 1, 2021, The Jazz community lost the fearless Ralph Peterson Jr. following a six-year battle with cancer. Ralph’s fierce advocacy for maintaining the Blakey-esque hard bop traditions was evident in his drumming and in his life with a seemingly unstoppable energy and drive to play, promote, and preserve the language of America’s original improvised musical art form known as jazz. The Spirit of Ralph Peterson Jr. carries on through his students, colleagues, band members, recordings, family, friends, and the legacy of his music that he played with undeniable conviction. Mapex celebrates this spirit and legacy with the special limited release of the Black Panther “ONYX” snare drum, an instrument designed to Ralph’s preferred specs in both looks and sound finalized just two weeks before his passing and representing a style and personality missed by all who knew him.

The Leg-Up attaches to the leg of your floor tom.  In fact, it will attach to any pole up to 12/7mm (half inch) in diameter, so that’s also a tom arm or a boom arm – cool right?

Then the long double bent knurled rod will enable you to perfectly position things like cowbells, tambourines, electronic pads, mountable metronomes etc. etc.

The low mass bracket is super easy to position around the kit, and the stainless-steel rod is a beautiful piece of precision engineering.
