Paiste Color Sound 900 Cymbals – Drummer’s Review

Here’s our review of a set of Paiste Color Sound 900 Cymbals, featuring…

  • 14″ Hi Hats,
  • 20″ Ride,
  • 18″ Crash,
  • 16″ Crash,
  • Constructed from CuSn8 (2002) Bronze,
  • Chip-resistant blue colour coating,
  • Available in Blue. Red, Purple or Black.

Paiste says…“Color Sound 900 cymbals are based on the range of models in the concurrently launched 900 Series. While they feature essentially corresponding sound and function, the color coating causes a slightly drier sound, shortens the sustain a bit, and results in a more focused attack. Significantly, the same flexibility and giving feel as in the 900 Series is present. Extensive research and design efforts have resulted in the most stunningly beautiful finishes: luminous translucent colors preserve the natural appearance of grooves and hammer marks and present a vibrantly radiant appearance. Notably, decades of experience have proven the Color Sound finish to be exceedingly tough and durable – the finish will not ever crack, chip or peel. Colorsound 900 cymbals are available in Black, Red, Blue and Purple.”

Elektron Announce Major Digitakt OS Upgrade

0

Swedish musical instrument company Elektron have released a major OS upgrade for the Digitakt, adding a plethora of powerful sound-shaping tools that open up strange new worlds and exciting possibilities.

Second LFO

The Digitakt now has double the LFO power at your fingertips. The second LFO gives you even more modulation possibilities, opening up a bonus parameter to modulate. It also includes the ability to control the first LFO with the second. Get ready to modulate the modulation.

Extended Pitch Range

With the Digitakt’s extended pitch powers, you can unlock previously unheard soundscapes within your sample. You can now dive three extra octaves down for tune-melting, bass-rumbling possibilities. Visit the dark side of the moon.

External Input Mixer

The Digitakt now has an external input mixer for mastery of incoming audio. Process your sound in stereo or split the mix and dual wield in two mono channels. Send through the reverb and delay, then add some extra side-chain ducking action with the master compressor. Mix-tastic!

Improved Multimode Filter

The Digitakt’s Multimode filter now has an even larger sound-shaping toolbox to work with. Emphasize different parts of your sound and find that sweet spot with a new EQ-style filter type. We also added an Envelope Delay to give extra focus to the transient of your kick or add a beautiful swelling effect to your pads. Wield the wave your way.

Base-width Filter

Much requested from its Digi sibling, a Base-width filter has been added to the Digitakt. This additional filter gives you more control when it comes to finding space for your sounds, working in tandem with the Multimode filter. You can also access it via LFO destination to unlock even more modulation potential.

And much more

There is also the addition of multi-track step recording, global FX/mix, individual track resampling, GUI improvements, performance improvements, and plenty more. For a full list of new features, improvements, and bug fixes – check the release notes.

Overbridge

To use the upgraded Digitakt OS with Overbridge, please update to Overbridge 2.0.58, also released today to support the new firmware.

With the LP Tambo-Rings drummers and percussionists can add subtle jingle to their sonic palette. Available in two sizes, the rings are finished in a choice of black sand or stainless steel and jingles come in either brass or galvanized steel. The smaller, 6″ Tambo-Ring has five pairs of jingles and when laid over hi hats or cymbals offers a cool sizzle effect that is dry and raw. The larger, 14” Tambo-Ring features 15 pairs of jingles and adds another dynamic to grooves when used on hi-hats, cymbals, snares, toms and timbales. See the Tambo-Rings demonstrated by Stanton Moore here. The full LP Tambo-Ring range is:

Inspired and developed with Stanton Moore, the LP Tambo-Stick (LP9001) offers a different sound to a beatmaker’s grooves. The well balanced, 14″ solid maple stick has a natural satin finish and two pairs of steel jingles. The larger diameter front end provides added weight to enhance the instrument’s balance, improve durability and aide articulation. The tapered back fits comfortably in the hand while the central, pyrolyzed LP logo acts as a guide placing the jingles in the best alignment when played. Stanton Moore commented “I’m really digging the new Tambo-Stick as it not only sounds great but feels really good to play too, and the Tambo-Rings really add a cool jingle tambourine texture to the kit.

Toca Adds New Timbale to Custom Deluxe Percussion Instruments

0

For the past few years, the Toca Percussion line of Custom Deluxe bongos and congas has been lighting up the hand drumming world with its best-in-class quality, sound and playability combined with a choice of show-stopping color choices. Now, Toca has rounded out the line with a set of timbales, completing the traditional triumvirate of bongos, congas and timbales one has come to expect.

These timbales, with their 14” and 15” chrome plated steel shells produce a classic cascara as well as catch the spots and light up the stage. On top of those shells are Powder Coated Antique Bronze finished rims, that were specifically designed to hold up through thousands of rim shots and always look as great as they sound. And the tuning bolts have been lowered below the rim to reduce interference, making more of the drum accessible to rim shots, thus improving speed when moving from one drum to the other. There’s a fully adjustable cowbell mount and mounting bracket above the drums that allows the player to add cowbells and blocks as needed (but not included). One major frustration with many Timbales sets has been eliminated too! The wing nut used to tighten the mounting bracket has been placed below the rims so there’s no cross-sticking interference. And every good set of Timbales deserves a heavy duty, fully adjustable tripod stand. That’s exactly what Toca has provided for this set.

“At Toca, we understand that instruments like these, that literally take a beating, have to match the three demands of live performance.” says Lane Davy, Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing at RBI, “They need to look good on stage. They need to sound amazing. And they need to stand up to the rigors of road life and being played on stage!” These new Custom Deluxe Timbales pass this test with flying colors… along with some Antique Bronze.
