Schlagwerk Urban OS Cajons – Drummer’s Review

Here’s our review of a trio of Schlagwerk Urban OS cajons, featuring…

  • hand-built in Germany,
  • 6-ply birch construction,
  • internal reinforcement bars,
  • included foam cushion pad
  • internal velcro strips to refine snare sound.

Schlagwerk says…“The abbreviation OS in Schlagwerk’s Precise OS and Urban OS cajon ranges is in a class of its own:  OS (Open sound and fully Screwed playing surface) is a new, innovative feature in the Schlagwerk cajon universe.  The most apparent feature in the OS models is the new, fully screwed playing surface. During development, vibration points were determined and used to find the best positions for the screws so that the innovative screw pattern could be designed.  The resulting effect is, on the one hand, an extremely direct snare response. But on the other hand, this special design coupled with the reduced contract surface has created a very open basic sound. Thanks to the convenient design, the additional reinforcing bars on the inner sides boost the strong bass in the OS models without interfering with the sensitivity of the snare response.”

The Royal Marines Return To British-Made Drums

0
Stockport (UK) based drum builders The British Drum Co. is proud to reveal that their new Regimental Series flagship snare drum, The RS1, has been selected as the instrument of choice by the world-renowned Corps of Drums of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines.
The decision represents a welcome return to the historical tradition of the Royal Marines playing British-made drums following a period in which foreign instruments were the only viable alternative on offer. This remarkable development is a major milestone for the relatively young UK drum manufacturer, which is still only in its fourth year of operation.
British Drum Co. RS 1

The Royal Marines’ decision to choose the RS1 is testament to the high standards of quality and innovation built in to the drum. The drums have been designed to be lightweight yet also ultra-reliable and simple to maintain. Brand new technologies were developed entirely in-house at the British Drum Co. solely for the Regimental Series drums. Chief amongst these was the Levitone™ parallel snare mechanism, a system which allows the snare wires to retain their tension even when disengaged, allowing for a smooth and silent transition between the playing states on both upper and lower heads. The Levitone™ systems bring an unprecedented level of innovation to what is essentially, a very traditional instrument, but the benefits are very much appreciated by today’s musicians. In keeping with British Drum Company’s fine attention to detail, the RS1 model produced for the Royal Marines contains a very special component. Each drum possesses, with the kind permission of The National Museum of the Royal Navy, a fragment of English Oak retrieved from the ancient timbers of HMS Victory, incorporated into the inside of the drum’s shell. This, in itself, is a remarkable achievement as use of the wood is rarely granted and then, only for extremely worthy situations, so it was important that the limited quantity of this precious material was employed wisely and effectively. The Victory Oak has been sensitively, but beautifully presented in the form of a commemorative disc accompanied by an inscription of the lyrics of the Regimental March Past of the Royal Navy, “Heart Of Oak”.

The drum also bears the Royal Marines’ motto, “Per Mare Per Terram”, which means By Sea, By Land, on all the lug washers. The emotional and cultural significance of this inclusion has not been lost on members of the Corps of Drums who have instantly formed an abiding bond with their new instruments.Equipped with their new instruments and bursting with pride, the Corps of Drums of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines marched out on to the stage of the Royal Albert Hall in London to perform with their British Drum Co. RS1 Victory model snare drums at the Mountbatten Festival of Music in March 2019. In attendance was His Royal Highness The Duke of Sussex, who is the Captain-General of the Royal Marines. The spectacle of 28 drummers playing this innovative, yet traditional British-made snare drum in its debut performance was something quite special to experience. In keeping with the British Drum Co. brand promise, the RS1 drums looked amazing, sounded amazing and made everyone involved, feel amazing. British Drum Co.’s Marching Division Manager, Stu Warmington, said, “I am immensely proud of the Regimental Series drums. The RS1 Victory model produced for the Royal Marines represents the pinnacle of our achievements in marching drums so far and I am delighted that the Corps of Drums of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines have chosen our instruments as their drums of choice”.

British Drum Co. presentation of RS1

Professor Dominic Tweddle, Director General of The National Museum of the Royal Navy, said, “The Royal Marines Band Service is considered to be one of the finest in the world. How fitting then that a piece of the finest historic ship in the world should feature inside the drum. HMS Victory is often used as a stunning backdrop for its music and we are honoured that she should be remembered this way”. Keith Keough, CEO of the British Drum Co., added, “As the CEO of the British Drum Co. – a UK manufacturing company that’s only just over three years old – I am incredibly proud to be able to launch the Regimental Series. Every single member of the BDC team has put their heart and soul into this project and the Marines’ overwhelmingly positive reaction to our drums has been a validation of our drum-making expertise”.

Cympad Shark adds new twist to snare drum mutes

0

Newly launched by Swiss-based Cympad is a new take on the snare drum mute – the Cympad Shark, which Cympad says ‘keeps more of the initial attack of the drum and then eliminates the unwanted resonances’.

UK distributor The Music Shipping Co adds: ‘The Shark’s exclusive hinged design, with only the smaller portion fixed to the head, allows most of the surface of the Shark to ‘float’ on top of the playing surface – subtly reducing volume and resonance according to the power and intensity of the stroke. Keeping the initial snare drum attack is something that all other damping systems are unable to do. The Shark is easily removable and can be used and re-used and is manufactured from premium-grade cellular foam.

‘Cympad has revolutionised cymbal sounds with their Chromatic Optimisers and Moderator series, giving subtle control of cymbal sound and volume to suit venues and performance styles and they look set to do the same with snare drums now’.

Supplied in a plastic carry case Cympad’s shark available now at SRP £13.99

LP Brings A Touch Of Latin To London

0

Latin Percussion (LP) recently celebrated more than half a century as the largest hand percussion brand in the world by hosting a second Rhythm Jam concert at the world famous Ronnie Scott’s jazz club in London. Special guests at the event were Grammy Award-winning percussionist Giovanni Hidalgo and Jamiroquai’s Sola Akingbola with his band, Critical Mass.

LP’s Brand Manager, Derek Zimmerman, commented, “Last year we celebrated LP’s longstanding association with New York City by throwing a similar event at the Cutting Room in Manhattan. The positive energy and comradery were undeniable.  Sola had wanted to include Giovanni at an event in the UK, so we decided to revisit the idea this year and invite our family to come jam with us at this incredible venue. Big thanks goes out to Ronnie Scotts for making this all possible!

The entire concert was filmed and will be released on LP’s YouTube channel later in the year.  LP’s social media platforms will be posting further information regarding the concert broadcast.

Founded in 1964, LP has been a leading pioneer and major innovator in the development of percussion instruments. Such is the company’s reputation many world-renowned artists, including Giovanni Hidalgo, play their instruments and work with them to develop new ones with specific sounds and styles.

Giovanni Hidalgo is arguably the world’s greatest contemporary conga player. His innovative approach has changed the art, concept and technique of conga playing, taking it to new heights. In recognition of his contribution to the world of percussion, the event saw him presented with the newly-established Latin Percussion Legacy Award.

The party showcased Sola Akingbola (Jamiroquai) and his Critical Mass band members, Michel Catellanos Rojas (drums), Leon Stenning (guitar), Jeremiah Olaleye (bass and vocals) and Nathan Williams (keyboards).

Joining them for the jam were the very best of British and European percussionists including the multi-award winning Pete Lockett (Peter Gabriel, Jeff Beck), Karl Vanden Bossche (Blur, Gorillaz) João Caetano (Incognito), Rob ‘Skins’ Anderson (Alexander O’Neal), Orlando Poleo and musical theatre’s go to percussionist Will Fry (Motown The Musical, Lion King).
