NAMM News: Zildjian Debut New Ranges

0

Avedis Zildjian Company recently introduced the new City Pack cymbal set at the 2018 Winter NAMM Show. This four cymbal set is designed to deliver the Zildjian sound for smaller-sized drum kits and percussion set-ups. The pack features cymbals from the A Zildjian Family including two new cymbals: the 18” A Zildjian Uptown Ride and 12” A Zildjian New Beat HiHats. The City Pack also includes a 14” A Zildjian Fast Crash. “With the growth of smaller kits for use in apartments, small clubs or intimate acoustic settings, we wanted to create a pack that meets these needs and provides a great alternative to over-sized cymbals,” said Victor Filonovich, Cymbal Category Manager for Zildjian.

Also new for 2018 is the K Zildjian Sweet Collection: “With the continued success of our A Sweet Rides, we wanted to create a new collection of extremely versatile cymbals within our K Family that are larger in size and thinner that delivers a darker and warmer tonality with more sound frequency,” says Filonovich.

Zildjian K Sweet Collection

The K Sweet Collection compromises nine models including 16” & 20” Crashes, two larger sized Rides (21” & 23”) and larger-sized HiHats (15” & 16”). The Crashes and HiHats feature unlathed bells for greater tonal spread and additional sound frequencies while the two K Sweet Rides are darker versions of the popular A Zildjian Sweet Rides.

A slight departure from cymbals will be the launch of new accessories for drummers. Included in the line-up are six new cymbal bags, two new drumstick bags, a premium rolling cymbal case and a variety of pre-packaged accessories including a ‘Survival Kit’ which contains the perfect assortment of emergency items every drummer needs at home or at the gig.

The new line of cymbal bags includes the ultimate road bag with the rugged 24” Premium Backpack Cymbal bag. This bag features five graduated cymbal dividers to keep cymbals safe and a new 16″ expandable HiHat pocket and clutch holder for increased cymbal capacity.  For maximum durability, the bag includes military-grade hideaway backpack and shoulder straps and a cymbal protection system composed of rubber built into the inside and outer bottom.

Finally, Zildjian now have new and improved versions of its popular 5A and 5B drumsticks.  Over 30 models have been re-designed from the ground-up to improve their style, durability and response, the company says. All new 5A and 5B models now feature a reduced tip size, increased neck size, longer tapers and an improved balance, response and durability.

NAMM NEWS: Pearl Launch A Multitude Of New Products

0

Pearl has recently launched a multitude of new releases at the NAMM 2018 show, with new kits, accessories, drums, colours and more.

Pole position goes to the Session Series, returning with a custom upgrade from the boutique-level Masterworks spectrum. New Session Studio Select drums shift to the classic shell blend that made them an artist favourite. The Session Studio Select shell is a thin, 5.4mm EvenPly-Six combination of masters-grade birch and African mahogany. The controlled punch of Pearl’s fresh 60-degree bearing edge delivers a blend of pre-EQ’d clarity and tonal warmth, the maker says. There are three finishes to choose from including two high gloss lacquers.

Meanwhile. Pearl’s Decade Maple gains two new configurations, including the Bop Kit special order shell pack (18×14 bass drum, 12×8 rack tom, 14×14 floor tom, 14×5.5 snare drum).

Pearl Decade Maple Kit

Pearl is also expanding its Modern Utility Snare Line with new steel models. ‘Shimmering, open, and untamed, each Modern Utility Steel snare features a 1mm beaded Steel shell, rolled to ring with open punch at full force, and speak with crisp sensitivity at lower impact,’ Pearl says. The 14” models come in both 5” and 6.5” depths and feature Pearl’s CL arch lugs and smooth SR700 snare strainer for precise tunability.

The company has also teamed up with YouTube star Casey Cooper (known as COOP3RDRUMM3R to his subscribers) to create The Igniter: ‘…a snare created specifically to instantly improve the sound of any drum kit. The Igniter’s 14”x5” shell features an all Maple interior to enhance power, tone and projection. Custom flame and pinstripe graphics draw inspiration from one of Casey’s signature performances, while CL bridge lugs are augmented by Red gaskets to add to its unique character’.

Sticking with snares, Pearl is also due to unveil the latest addition to its value Concert Series with the release of the new Steel Shell CRS Concert snare drums and will also announce the release of the New Aluminum Shell Symphonic Series snare drums. The Symphonic Series Ply-Maple SYP model concert drums have been some of the most requested products made by Pearl for over two decades, the company says. ‘The world famous PHA Philharmonic Aluminum shell has been recognized as one of the most important snare drums of the last 20 years, and is now a standard voice in modern concert percussion. Now for the first time, you can get the flexibility and combinations of color and timbre from the famous SR300 Triple Strainer combined with the power and cutting tone of an Aluminum shell. The proven higher pitch and cut of aluminum is the perfect complement to the 100% maple of the SYP Symphonic models. Available in two sizes: 14”x5.5”, and 14”x6.5” to accomplish everything from the lightest roll to a thunderous crack in solo and ensemble work’.

Concert Series Snare Drum

Tom Freer of the Cleveland Orchestra collaborated with Pearl designers to create the new 13”x2.5“ Philharmonic Pancake snare drum, Pearl says, ‘…to meet the growing demand for a solo and audition drum that could be “whisper quiet” and professional grade for years of use. In other words, maximum sensitivity was needed in the smallest possible format.’

Risking new product overload Pearl also has Limited Edition snares for 2018 including new practice drums for learners – a 14″ x 5.5″ steel snare drum and a 13″ x 3.5″ wood version.

All this plus a clutch of new pedals, accessories and percussive add-ons and you had what must surely be one of the busiest stands at this year’s 2018 NAMM show!

Rammstein Powerhouse Joins DW Drums Artist Family

0

Drummer Christoph Schneider of two-time, Grammy®-nominated heavy metal band, Rammstein signed with Oxnard, California-based DW Drums as an endorser of drums, hardware and pedals. Rammstein is scheduled to begin recording on their seventh studio album in early 2018.

A native of East Berlin, Schneider attended music school and began studying trumpet at an early age. However, he was determined to learn to play drums despite his parent’s objections and resorted to building a “drumset” out of cans, buckets and other household items before eventually buying his first-ever kit at the age of 14. Schneider’s early band projects included Die Firma and hardcore punk outfit Feeling B which included Rammstein members, Flake Lorenz (keyboards) and Paul Landers (guitars).

“Growing up in East Berlin before the fall of the Berlin Wall, I always dreamed of owning a DW drumset one day” said Schneider. “After the wall fell in 1989, one of the first things I did was walk over to the former West Berlin and I bought a set of DW drums – which were very costly at the time by East Berlin standards. Those were the drums I used to record our first Rammstein record. Signing with DW now as an artist feels like coming full circle in my musical career.”

Founded in 1994, Rammstein is known for incredible live shows featuring elaborate pyrotechnics and theatrical stage elements. The best-selling German rock band of all time, Rammstein has sold in excess of 20 million albums and received worldwide acclaim for their highly conceptual videos and live concert films.

New Products From Gon Bops

0

Percussion specialists Gon Bops has recently announced several new additions to their ranges being launched at the 2018 NAMM show led by new Roberto Quintero signature Fiberglass Congas and Bongo. Crafted from premium fiberglass shells with Gon Bops California Series Contour Hardware and custom Remo Skyndeep heads, Gon Bops says the new drums produce deep, resonant bass tones and loud, cutting highs. The Congas are offered in Conga, Tumba and Super Tumba sizes, while the Bongo is a 7” & 8.5″ pairing.

100% hand-woven in Brazil from sustainable natural materials, Gon Bops Caxixi ‘deliver lively, organic sounds that provide excellent rhythmic accompaniment and color’. The combination of wild banana tree seeds striking the hard gourd-skin base produces a sharp, high-pitched tone, contrasting with the softer, deeper pitch when the seeds strike the woven body. Sold as single shakers in three sizes – mini, small and large – Gon Bops Caxixi are ideal for playing an endless variety of rhythms and sound effects. They can be played individually, or as different-sized pairs for contrasting tones.

Also new will be Fiesta Cajon models, offering sound and quality well above their price point, Gon Bops claims. All four new models feature internal snare wires, extra-large rubber feet for superior isolation, a rubber seat pad and a size and form factor that is beginner friendly. In addition, the cajons are offered in four new colours chosen to make a bold statement both in stores and on the stage.

Hand crafted from hand-selected, high-density hickory, new Gon Bops Hickory Claves (PCLAVH) offer: ‘piercing, high-pitched attack with a sonic profile almost identical to classic Rosewood claves’. Both the clave and striker are 8.25” x 1” (209.5mm x 25.4 mm) in size.

Finally, there’s a new Gon Bops Bongo Duffel Bag which includes an adjustable padded divider for safely transporting bells, tambourines, or other small percussion instruments, without damaging the bongo shells or head.

Dream Celebrates Milestone With Limited Edition Addition

0

Celebrating a decade in the music industry, Dream Cymbals will be unveiling their Limited Edition 10th Anniversary Cymbal at the NAMM exhibition in California this January.

The 10th Anniversary Cymbal is a 24″ Small Bell Flat Ride modified with a special patina finish that a member of the Dream Cymbals Team in Toronto, Canada, has created by hand. Dream tells us: “Each anniversary cymbal is entirely unique with an individual look and sound depending on the artist’s patina design while maintaining the defining characteristics of our wildly popular 24″ Small Bell Flat Rides. Beautiful stick articulation with a dark and dirty wash that will create a lion’s roar if you open them up on the shoulder. There is a huge sonic landscape within each of these very special cymbals.”

Dream Cymbals are handmade and hand-hammered from B20 Bronze by artisans using forging techniques developed over centuries, and the 10th Anniversary cymbal (which is limited to just 100 cymbals) will also include a laser etched logo and unique serial number.

Ludwig unveils Raw Brass shell snare drum

0

Following the success of the Raw Copperphonic, Ludwig’s UK distributor Active Music has announced that the US manufacturer’s latest addition to the World Renowned series is the Raw Brass.

At the core of the Raw Brass snare is a 1.2mm seamless machine drawn brass shell which is the foundation of the Black Beauty. The shell is subjected to an oxidation process making each snare drum unique. Because the raw shell is smooth to the touch and carries no coating it will oxidise slightly further: ‘Creating a truly stunning shell that is like no other,’ Active says.

The drum is now available in the UK in sizes 14”x5”, 14”x6.5” and 14”x8” but only in limited numbers due to the complexity of the manufacturing process.

Brand New Metal From Meinl…

0

Meinl is known for having the absolute widest selction of cymbal sounds and effects. Here we have a selection of cymbals adds to that ever–expanding tradition, and is just a few of the new models fresh for 2018…

Byzance Jazz and Traditional series add-ons:

The new Byzance Monophonic and Polyphonic Rides have similar names, but are two totally different instruments. First, the Monophonic Ride is constructed by taking elements such as hammering, lathing, and a unique shape from other Byzance cymbals and blending them to create a new and unique voice. Within the Byzance Jazz series. Next, the Polyphonic Ride is like having three cymbals in one. We took the three main elements of a cymbal: crashing, riding and the bell, and created a cymbal that retains each element individually as if it is three separate cymbals from the Traditional series. The Monophonic Ride could be that one jazz ride you have been searching for, but, if you can only take one cymbal to your next rock/pop/ funk gig, the Polyphonic will be everything you need.

Artist Concept Models:

The Artist Concept Models are a collection of cymbals voices. They are the product of Meinl Cymbals Artists and the Meinl R&D team to craft unique and innovative sounds that allown the artist to explore, create and forge ahead as leaders in acoustic music and in the art of drumming. Each one adds a musical note to the set-up emphasizing the artist’ individuality and playing style.

Pure Alloy add-ons: 10” Splash, 18” China and 22” Medium Crash:

The new Meinl Pure Alloy additions build on the popularity and success of the classic Pure Alloy tone and balance. The big 22” medium crash is the perfect punctuation at the end of a big arena rock fill and is great for crash-riding. The splash is then, crisp and will sizzle in the studio while the china ideally offsets the trashy lows, punchy attack, and medium sustain sought after in a rock china.
