Latin Percussion Expands Carlos Santana Signature Series

Latin Percussion (LP) is proud to announce another milestone collaboration with multi Grammy Award winner and philanthropist, Carlos Santana.  The existing line-up of Santana branded drums and collectables now features Africa Speaks and Black Magic instruments to further complement the line.

Santana’s relationship with LP spans more than fifty years. During that time, he and his band members have played a wide variety of the company’s percussion instruments,  both live and in concert.  The band’s signature blend of Latin infused rock, jazz, blues, salsa and Africa rhythms have become synonymous with LP.

The all-new Africa Speaks congas are constructed utilizing 3-ply Siam Oak staves, and are finished in a Yellow Stain Lacquer that is embellished with the “African Mask” graphic art from Santana’s 2019 release. Included in the collection are matching Bongos (LP201AX-SAS), Quinto (LP522X-SAS), Conga (LP559X-SAS) and Tumba (LP552X-SAS). All are custom fitted with handpicked rawhide heads and chrome Comfort Curve II® rims.


Also new to the LP Santana offering are a newly-designed set of 10 and 11-inch Aspire Black Magic congas. The drums come complete with a sturdy double conga stand (LPA646-BM), while a matching  set of  bongos (LPA601-BM) is also available. The Siam Oak shells are finished in a stunning Black Sparkle Lacquer with black powder coated hardware and natural rawhide heads. Watch the video on the Aspire Black Magic congas here.

To satisfy LP and Santana fans alike, two new Santana mini-tuneable congas have also been added to the collection. The first design is an exact mini replica of the Africa Speaks pro conga.  Others include an elegant Black Lacquer drum featuring the Santana Lion Art album artwork and a White Lacquer drum with the classic Abraxas artwork. The tuneable and playable minis are 11” tall with 4-1/2” rawhide heads, a mini Comfort Curve® rim and brushed nickel plated hardware. Watch the video on the Mini congas here.

Jazz Fest takes place over two weekends, 29th April to 1st May and 5th to 8th May 2022, at the Fair Grounds Race Course in New Orleans, LA. The first-ever concert event was held in 1970 in Congo Square New Orleans, the open area space where enslaved African Americans gathered on Sundays in the early 1880s to create sounds that ultimately influenced all American Music. The inaugural event, featuring legendary artists such as Fats Domino and Duke Ellington had a modest audience of hundreds. Today the event is one of the nation’s largest spectaculars with an annual attendance of over half a million.

Neumann Presents The Miniature Clip Mic System

German microphone specialists Neumann.Berlin have announced their first product range designed especially for close mic’ing instruments. To create their new Miniature Clip Mic System, the engineers in Berlin elevated electret technology and its production process to a whole new level. The new KK 14 capsule is able to capture the details of sound better than anything that came before – without any of the production tolerances that have been associated with electret solutions to date. The system’s modular construction has been designed to ensure excellent stability and long service life for live and stage performances. The system includes nine mounting solutions that make it possible to find the optimum positioning for acoustics while simultaneously protecting the instrument.

The Miniature Clip Mic System will be available in spring 2022. 

Portfolio Manager Stephan Mauer: “We had been dissatisfied with the sound delivered by electret solutions for quite some time. Technicians and artists alike want greater substance, higher precision for low and medium frequencies and more openness. At the same time, we wanted to finally be able to create electret microphones that offered constant performance, so that sound engineers would not have to continuously deal with production tolerances impacting sound level and frequency response.”

Neumann’s developers spent six years researching the capsules and the production processes that would be necessary to make this a reality. “All that work paid off.” Stephen continues, “This capsule is unlike anything that came before.” With minimized self noise and an extremely high maximum sound level of 152 dB, the KK 14 delivers perfect results for both very quiet and very loud instruments.

In addition, the Miniature Clip Mic System is modular and rugged. Neumann assembles the KK 14 capsules by hand and encapsulates them in a titanium housing. The capsule can be easily unscrewed from the gooseneck connector whenever necessary. All the other components are also easy to replace. Neumann did not design the system for a single season – it is designed to last for decades. It should therefore be no surprise that a market comparison reveals that this microphone system offers a superior return on investment.

The system boasts nine options for reliable attachment to brass, string and stringed instruments, pianos, drums and percussion. “Our field tests quickly revealed that all users share a desire for being able to reliably and securely position the microphone. Another wish that they all had in common was wanting to avoid damaging sensitive surfaces of their instruments. This gave rise to self-adjusting spring-loaded systems and newly developed mounting concepts for specific applications.”

Neumann CEO Ralf Oehl believes that this new system marks the beginning of a new reference: “We are proud that we have succeeded in redefining the potential of electret capsules. For the first time, they are more than just a compromise solution for technically demanding situations. With this product, we have created a new reference for sound that is truly natural, neutral and reliable – even in challenging technical or acoustic situations.”

Typical users of this microphone system include orchestras, theaters, musical productions, concert halls, big bands, brass sections and drummers. Thanks to connection cables with either a 3.5 mm jack, Lemo, MicroDot or 4-pin mini XLR connectors, the system is compatible with all standard bodypacks for wireless setups. The list price of the KK 14 capsule is €279/$299. Prices for sets start at €629/$699 (capsule, gooseneck, cable, mounting system, XLR adapter and windscreen).

Organisers of The UK Drum Show are proud to announce that The Corps of Drums of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines will be appearing at show in front of the British Drum Co. booth – Stand B10 – on Saturday 2nd April at The ACC Liverpool.

By special arrangement, Her Majesty’s Royal Marines will be opening the show with a fanfare of bugle and drums at the entrance of the Exhibition Hall in front of British Drum Co booth.

In addition to the opening of the show, by special arrangement, The Corps of Drums of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines will be performing a “Mess Beating”, a rare privilege as these are usually only performed at Regimental dinners at 11.30am, 13.30 and 15.30.

The British Drum Co. like to so many returning to The UK Drum Show next month, have created a British Drum Co Experience Room for guests to enjoy. “Side By Side” – another new feature for 2022 is an opportunity to compare and contrast the British Drum Co.
