PAS Honors Don Lombardi With 2020 President’s Industry Award

0

Drum Workshop Inc. (DW) is proud to announce founder and president, Don Lombardi has been honored by the Percussive Arts Society (PAS) with their prestigious 2020 President’s Industry Award. The Award recognizes individuals in the Percussion Industry who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in their field and exceptional support of the Society.

From humble beginnings Lombardi became a respected professional drummer and drum teacher opening a school called ‘Drum Workshop’ in Santa Monica, California in 1972. Under his guidance, Drum Workshop evolved to become one of the largest and most influential drum designers and manufacturers in the world. Lombardi’s innovative and pioneering approach to product development has led to more than thirty patents being registered in his name and has proved to be one of the key ingredients in the growth of the brand. His stewardship has seen the DW brand portfolio expand to include the revitalized Gretsch Drums, Latin Percussion and Slingerland. In 2008 Lombardi returned to his educator roots when he established the award winning Drum Channel to share his passion for drumming, further develop drum education and grow the drumming community. More recently he has been instrumental in the founding of Drum Workshop Music Foundation a new charitable organization whose goal is to provide the gift of music to underserved communities worldwide.

The PAS President’s Industry Award acknowledges Don Lombardi’s unique contribution to the world of drums, his outstanding achievements as a music educator plus his fifty years of innovation and commitment to the improvement of drums, pedals and hardware.

Speaking about the award Lombardi said: “I’m honored to be presented with an award from the Percussive Arts Society. Though manufacturing and education may seem like two different endeavors, like PAS I’ve always had a passion for education, and in coming up with inventions my goal has always been to improve the quality of a drummer’s life by designing products that make it easier to play, while also providing new tools to create with.

Commenting on the award,  Juels Thomas, Education and Events Manager for Drum Workshop and PAS Board Director, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled for Don to receive this much-deserved recognition. Of course everyone at DW knows how important and influential Don is as a pioneer for drumming and education. It’s wonderful to see the whole community also celebrate him for all of his accomplishments so far.

2BOX Speedlight E-Kit – Drummer’s Review

Here’s our review of a Speedlight Electronic Kit from 2BOX-Drums featuring…

Hardware:

  • Five-piece kit consisting of 10″ snare pad, 3 x 8″ tom pads & bass drum pad,
  • 12″ crash, 13″ hi-hat & 14″ ride cymbal pads,
  • hi-hat stand & rack to house all pads,
  • All necessary cables for connecting pads to module.

Module:

  • DrumIt Three drum module,
  • 4GB sound memory,
  • 44.1 kHz Sample rate with 24 bit digital to analog converters,
  • 15 trigger inputs,
  • 4 main outputs,
  • Line in,
  • Headphone,
  • Midi In/Out,
  • USB for transferring data.

2BOX says…”The Speedlight kit is rugged, and solid. The playing surfaces are very realistic, and as possibly your first or second electronic kit expressive beyond the capabilities of any other drum manufacturer, especially when linked to the DrumIt3 module. The most important part of any electronic drum kit, is the sound source. It is the heart and soul of any kit. You can have a setup with lots of pads, cymbals, bells and whistles and it all looks very impressive. But! And it is a very important But! Unless the sound module can deliver cutting edge technology, with unparalleled sound the whole experience will be very disappointing. With the Speedlight kit you get what is possibly one of the best edrum modules ever designed. Simply compare the specifications of the Di3 module to any other module currently on the market, and you will quickly see it has very few competitors.

The PDP New Yorker Gets A Fresh Look

0

Pacific Drums and Percussion (PDP) announces exciting 2020 updates to the compact, portable and versatile line.  Created especially for the on-the-go drummer, New Yorker Series drums are a recommended choice for students, working drummers and players looking for a simplified set-up that won’t sacrifice sound.

The lightweight PDP New Yorker four piece kit has been re-designed to have an even more compact footprint. New for 2020 is a smaller, 14”x16” bass drum and slightly larger 5”x14” snare drum to go with its 8”x10” mounted tom and the 12”x13” floor tom. The new configuration is ideal for local gigs, rehearsal spaces and home studios.  Also new for 2020 are three new durable laminate finishes: Pale Rose Sparkle, Electric Green Sparkle and Black Onyx Sparkle.

Black Onyx Sparkle

PDP Brand Manager, Rob Dean, comments, “We really wanted to make some fun changes to the series. The 16” kick is a blast to play and can do so many things with different head combos and muffling techniques.  Poplar is a soft wood, so it works well for these smaller sizes.  And when we first showed them at NAMM, we were excited to see the reaction from younger drummers when they saw these cool new finishes.”

Pale Rose

The travel-friendly sets are fitted with low-mass, Teardrop Mini Turret™ lugs , DW True-Pitch™ Tuning, a versatile bass drum mount with auxiliary clamp and Remo® drum heads. A  bass drum lifter is included for optimal pedal placement and beater height.

Designed in California by DW, the kits feature all-poplar wood shell construction with “soft” 45 degree bearing edges that deliver a warm, punchy tonality.

Adoro Introduce Silent Sticks

0

Acoustic drums and cymbals can be too loud in settings including low-volume bands and volume-sensitive venues, music classes, drum lessons, praise bands in churches, practicing at home, even warming up on stage. So, Adoro have introduced Silent Sticks, an inexpensive means with which to cut acoustic drum and cymbal volume +/-50%, even when playing at normal velocity.

Says Adoro CEO Stefan Korth: “Something is wrong when a drummer must play behind a plexiglass shield or hold back and play more lightly because others think the drums are too loud.

According to Korth, Silent Sticks have three key design features that let drummers comfortably turn down their volume without turning down their playing. Dual-Twist Reflex Tips consisting of two twisted strands of firm, yet flexible monofilament nylon rounded tightly like small hoops are permanently embedded with epoxy into the stick shafts. Instead of bouncing like the bead of a typical stick, these tips rebound by flexing, making it possible to practice quietly or play gigs at lower volumes without adjusting the velocity of the playing. Second, the air-filled shafts (16”/406mm long; 0.47”/12mm dia.) are of lightweight but shock resistant polycarbonate that absorbs the impact of the hardest strokes. They will not wear out or warp. And for a relaxed no-slip grip of the sticks and great finger control there are textured rubber X-Grips.

“Silent Sticks,” notes Korth, “eliminate the need for a plexiglass cage or any other volume reducing gear. I have a pair in my bag alongside brushes, mallets and other options. If I must turn down my volume, I grab the Silent Sticks. Even on gigs where volume isn’t a concern, if there is a quiet song, I also put my wood sticks down and play with Silent Sticks. They give me definition and tone that I cannot get with bundles or rods. And with them I’m never too loud.”

According to Korth, Adoro also offer a volume-reducing bass drum beater and even low-volume drums, news of which will be forthcoming.

About Adoro:

In addition to Silent Sticks Adoro, whose HQ is located in Hamburg, Germany, designs and produces award-winning Adoro Custom Drums, Adoro Lotus drum hardware and Adoro drumheads.
