Alesis Introduce Crimson II Special Edition Drums

Alesis have announced a new nine-piece premium electronic drum kit featuring all-new white drum heads and the powerful Crimson II Drum Module, packed with in-demand sound and complete kit customisation options.

The Alesis Crimson II Special Edition features mesh heads, enabling quieter play in home or in the studio and natural feel. It features an 8-inch kick, 12-inch dual-zone snare, two 8-inch dual-zone rack toms and a 10-inch dual-zone floor tom, along with a 12-inch hi-hat with pedal, two 12-inch crashes with choke and 14-inch triple-zone ride. A premium quick-lock steel 4-post rack with separate double-braced snare stand keeps everything solidly anchored.

The included Crimson II Drum Module features 74 drum kits (54 factory + 20 user) with over 671 sounds and 120 play-along tracks built-in. Growth Rings: A Short Film Narrated by Neil Peart

In 2015, when Drum Workshop Inc. (DW) began working with Edge Factor to create the Masters of Resonance documentary, Neil Peart was rehearsing for Rush’s final R40 tour in the on-site Drum Channel studio. A chance introduction between the film’s writer/producer, a fellow Canadian, Jeremy Bout and Peart resulted in a short film Growth Rings. Written and narrated by the revered drummer and wordsmith, it chronicles the importance of music in marking key life moments, and historic milestones.

Since its quiet release on the 12th June 2020, this vivid and thoughtful reflection on the importance music has struck a chord with many people and is fast becoming a viral internet sensation. Its prescient and measured tones resonate in a world that is full of uncertainty and challenges and as Peart reminds everyone music is  ‘the weather of its time’ embodying ‘the moods and movements that gave it context’, just like the growth rings of a tree. Peart continues ‘communal music has the power to bring people together, to inspire and reinforce their shared beliefs’.

The Professor, known for his meticulous and intricate drum work, was also Rush’s primary lyricist and conceptual brainchild, adept at weaving his philosophic thoughts into many of the band’s catalog of critically acclaimed songs. The perceptive words of this short film will, like many of his song lyrics, become ‘milestones and eras of our lives’ and ‘resonate with us during these times’.

Peart passed away in January 2020, after a lengthy battle with cancer, sending shockwaves through the music world and drumming community. Considered one of the best rock drummers in history, his legacy  continues to echo through people’s lives because as he concludes in the film, ‘when you find that singular focus, the thing you were created to do, your art will take root’.

Aston Element Heads Towards Worldwide First

Last month DR published news of a worldwide first, with Aston Mics planning to design and produce a mic that would be wholly sound crafted by the public.

Only 4 years old, this British business has already been nominated for 3 NAMM TEC Awards, won Best in Show, and won their first TEC this January… “No other Pro-Audio company in the world, in any niche, has ever achieved this, and we’re up against some very big hitters” states Aston.

With production for the Aston Element commencing on July 15th, having launched a campaign to create the first ever microphone, through a global public process, contributors will see the final outcome of their vision and direct participation, by public vote in blind listening contributions online, become a reality.

In what appears to be a first, Aston have empowered the public to have a say in how their recordings sound, by giving thousands of home studio recording enthusiasts the chance to get involved in a global music project from home while under CV1-9 lock-down.

Zultan was launched at the dawn of the third millennium. Introducing any new product is an exciting event. But they decided to present these cymbals at the Musikmesse trade show in Frankfurt without a brand or product name. Naked, you might say. They wanted to keep their origin and maker a secret, ensuring that nothing would prejudice the drummers who gave their opinions on sound and quality. Thankfully, the response was positive across the board Zultan concluded. “Even disregarding their price point, these cymbals had held their own in terms of finishing, quality and sound when compared to cymbals by renowned makers,” claim Zultan. That was the first chapter of the Zultan story, written before these cymbals even had a brand name.

The first series was christened the Rock Beat series. As is typical for a debut release, the range was limited in terms of the breadth of its appeal. Consequently, the new cymbals weren’t able to satisfy all tastes. Louder cymbals such as the Q and F5 were added to the portfolio, named after nature’s fiercest storms. Over time, they extended their Rock Beat and CS series, incidentally one of the world’s only cymbals made using B25 bronze. Next came the Aja series, produced in East Asia. Its name was a nod to the Steely Dan album that marked the breakthrough of Steve Gadd.

All other series are manufactured in Turkey. There the know-how and expertise of local artisans and their experience with traditional manufacturing enables Zultan to offer an enticingly diverse range of products, delivering aesthetic and sonic variety thanks to a multitude of different processing techniques and tools.

When planning the market debut and distribution strategy for their cymbals, they chose to forge their own, less worn path. When they decided 20 years ago to offer our cymbals only online, many thought the internet was a poor sales medium for cymbals. It was no surprise that many drummers were sceptical. But that spurred us on towards an approach that was radically new at the time: make cymbals audible on the internet.

Audiobridge Brings Studio-Quality Possibilities To Smartphones

audiobridge has a simple proposal: Most of what you need to make quality recorded music–multitracking, for example–can be packed into a smartphone.

This proposal is more radical than it sounds at first. The world’s more than 7 billion phones can now act as little recording studios, ready for everyone, everywhere to lay down ideas, play with arrangements, and make music. “We’re making something for everyone, not just for pros or aspiring pros, but for the entire world, including young people and kids,” says audiobridge founder and CEO Matt Miller, himself an experienced musician, session player, and songwriter. “That’s the vision, to have the power of Pro Tools and the simplicity of a voice memo.”

The vision is now available as an iOS app for free. The app reflects a reality where major hits are being composed on phones, and where many successful songwriters first record their ideas on the fly via hurried voice memos. audiobridge’s multi-track capabilities let composers and songwriters take things further, turning hummed lines into full arrangement sketches (or finished tracks). In addition, due to lockdown, audiobridge’s remote collaboration features have led monthly recorded hours on the app to skyrocket, growing 38x between May 2019 and May 2020. During the same period, the app has increased its MAU tenfold to more than 10K with minimal promotion.

Making serious music on a smartphone makes sense to many musicians and producers, people who may not have the resources to invest in a pricy home studio or buy expensive studio time, and who already use their phones to create. Miller knows their struggle well; he was a working musician who did everything from touring the college circuit to writing songs for other artists. In LA clubs, he would often play five hours a night as part of blues bands, mastering his craft well enough to get regular calls for studio sessions. For his various projects, he longed to get ideas down fast and share them quickly with collaborators, even once he shifted focus from full-time music to freelance software development, to eventually running his own software development company.

Miller figured a mobile app for multitracking and collaboration was around the corner. “But it was just never done,” he says. “By a certain time, I had done enough development to know how the tech works, and as a musician, I knew what exactly I had been seeing in my head for years. It was naturally something I ended up doing once I had the resources, with a few lightbulb moments along the way.”

Miller knew from the beginning that the design and user experience would be key to making the app intuitive, so a musician could download, pick up her phone, and get recording immediately. To pack the powerful features of digital audio workstations onto a small device, however, you need to understand exactly what people need to see and how to streamline their work. “It’s all about UX. What we’ve done very consciously is keep it mobile only and keep it simple,” says Miller. “audiobridge only works in portrait mode and doesn’t support landscape, for example. We’ve embraced the constraints, inserting the recording process into how people already use their devices.”

To simplify the app interface yet keep all the features, audiobridge’s development team has strived to automate key moments. Many creators don’t want a full buffet of detailed options; they just want their work to sound good. “The question is how do we add features when we’re out of room on a small screen without creating problems. That’s where machine learning and other automation comes in. You automate as much of the extraneous process as possible,” Miller explains.

Automation and tech tools have historically led to new sounds and creative practices, and audiobridge hopes to empower people to find them. This also means welcoming developers with cool ideas, effects, or features that can work with the app without audiobridge having to build them in house from scratch. “We love community involvement,” enthuses Andrew Perusi, audiobridge’s product partnership manager (and the bassist for pop rock band Hanson). “The artists who use our platform and the new creative ways they engage with their collaborators help shape audiobridge. User input is a big part of our story, and it’s how we’ve built audiobridge from the beginning.”

“There’s a lot of talk in the music tech space about democratizing music creation, but it’s intellectually dishonest,” states Miller. “They may say it but they don’t do it. Some companies have really cool powerful tech that can make the creation process open to all, but they are using these old-school business models, which often set up barriers to music creation. No one is willing to admit that they don’t know yet what models might fit this new creativity, or that they may actually be setting up unnecessary barriers for musicians.” This can lead to bizarre, nonsensical hybrids, when the old legacy business practices or processes get tacked onto innovative products, in the interest of appeasing antsy investors and making money now.

Miller, Perusi, and audiobridge see it differently, sticking to a truly democratic model inspired by the innovative speed of open source software approaches. “You can’t do things the old way,” Miller insists. “You need to think outside the industry” and work within a small device everyone knows and loves.
